Paul Revere, where are you ?

A Wind Law, voted in unanimously by our state legislators, embraced by practically every state department and sold in private sessions to every local politician.

What kind of dreamers would place themselves , face to face, against these overwhelming odds ?

Not one Democrat nor one Republican voted against this law.

The perfect storm.

The brave sailor against the whale.

The sling shot artist against the giant.

The meek musket against the cannon.

My, what… Continue

After The Wind Rush

Will Maine become an electrical importer because of the “ wind rush ?”

Currently, Maine produces electricity using 50% reliable, renewable sources ( hydro-power and biomass ) and exports a surplus.

With 3 large natural gas plants built in the 1990’s, Maine will be able to meet electrical demand until 2017.

What will all the new generation wind facilities do for us ?

Experiences in California and Denmark may answer this question.

Denmark has reached the goal of producing… Continue

The Sounds From Our Mountaintops

Here's what you are going to get with wind turbines on the ridgelines. It will be equivalent to a rock band at each turbine site playing from a stage 400 feet above the ground, but these bands won't have much musical talent.

Dixfield Wind Ordinance Committee Meeting Feb. 26

I attended the Dixfield wind ordinance committee meeting of Feb 26th to see how they were coming along:

Well, we might just as well have Patriots Renewables writing it. Skitbitsky and our code enforcement officer, Calvin Beaumier, are taking all the work done by Norine Clarke and Steve Donahue and re-framing the wording to essentially allow the wind farms on Colonel Holman. Initially, Norine and Steve proposed a one mile setback to adjacent property lines, as the town of Montville,… Continue

Math On Highland Plantation Project

Some math done for the Highland Plantation Project :

King states natural gas prices drive the cost of electrical generation. Since last September, natural gas prices have stayed between 4 to 6 dollars per mmbtus. At $6 per mmbtu, electrical generation by gas is priced at $45 per megawatt/hour. (from ISO-NE).

King states the project will cost 273 million dollars to bring to operational stage.

King states a name plate capacity of 128.6 Megawatts/hr

Assume a 30% actual… Continue

What is Maine to us

How can anyone who has spent any time in Maine conjure up an idea of transforming the top of the state’s mountains into a place for giant industrial generators ?. This is embarrassing to us who have worked diligently to clean up our environment for the past 40 years. From this resolve, We have come to see our state for it’s beauty , shining forth through the lakes, streams, shorelines and, yes, our mountains too.

Is this the right course for Maine ? Do wind machines really fit here ? We… Continue

E. Adams of the Lewiston Sun Journal stated in a story today that;

"Because the land on which most of the project would be built is privately owned and subject only to state regulations, Carthage

residents would not have a say in whether it could be built."

I sent her an email at eadams@sunjournal.com :

The Finger Pointing Is About To Begin

Hello, allow me introduce myself as just another working stiff resolved to scratching out a living in this great state of Maine. Being a fairly simple man, I won’t even pretend to comprehend the complexities of government. I must work, therefore I don’t have the time nor energy to devote to trying to understand . Consequently, you will rarely hear my voice, for I , although full of political opinions, am intimidated by the thought of embarrassing myself before the omnipotence of government.… Continue

Governor, you should be WORRIED

A recent article in " Maine Business " reveals " the general backlash against wind power worries him." " Him" is Governor Angus King. Governor, you should be WORRIED

When you were Governor, you often spoke of the strong, independent nature of the Maine people. Was this just rhetoric, a political ploy ? Surely, your estimation of the will of the common folks hasn't been "spun" by influences which would pronounce you as the savior of our planet.

Your partner once told me, after… Continue

A Few Reflections On The Wind Debate In Dixfield

I had approached Linda Walbridge about having someone from Hydro-Quebec speak at the debate ,feeling they might represent an alternative to wind farms in Maine. Not sure whether Linda thought much of this idea, I emailed Hydro-Quebec with the request, fully knowing it would be rejected. To my surprise, I got a response. As one would expect, they were very conservative with their answers, but, nevertheless , one can surmise they are interested in becoming an energy giant and exports to America… Continue

Do You Want Cheaper Electricity ?

Peter Mills stated during the debate that Hydro-Quebecs introduction of cheaper electricity into Maine would be a disadvantage to wind farm development in Maine......................... Hydro-Quebec’s move last month to boost its power exports to the United States by acquiring New Brunswick Power’s transmission lines has raised eyebrows in New England, where renewable energy ventures would face stiff competition from low-cost hydro generated north of the… Continue

Woodstock Maine citizens in the hands of the DEP

Patriots Renewables has sent and the DEP has received their application for Woodstock. So far as I can tell, the DEP has not designated it as complete for processing. Once it is designated as complete, people will have 20 days to request a public hearing according to rules. The date of designation as complete fror processing will appear on the DEP website under Spruce Mountain Wind Development. The application documents from Patriots is currently on the DEP site.

Comprehensive Plans

One item that caught my attention within the Dixmont wind ordinance relates to "scenic or special resource" In addition to addressing scenic resources of state and national significance, it includes areas of local significance as identified in their comprehensive plan. The intent here is to prohibit development ( i.e. wind farms) from these areas. The ordinance also states setback distances to these areas.

One option a town has power to implement is to adopt stricter rules in regards to… Continue

A conversation pertaining to the upcoming wind debate in Dixfield

Freemont and I just got back from Dr. Aniel's place where we had a 2 hour discussion. I had my reservations concerning the upcoming wind debate in Dixfield. It looks like the Doctor is going to be substantially outnumbered by the opposition and I wondered if he was up to the task. I can assure you he is prepared and I am certain this will be a big win for us. Our support by attending is important. I will be… Continue

Restoration and the soil structures in Maine's Mountains

Having reviewed the Dixmont Wind Ordinance, I am particularly curious with their decommissioning and site restoration plan:

(1) The plan shall provide for the removal from the Project Parcels, and lawful disposal or disposition of, all Wind Turbines and other structures, hazardous materials, electrical facilities, and all foundations. The plan shall provide for the removal of all access roads. The plan shall provide for the restoration of the Project Parcels to a condition similar to that… Continue

The driving force behind wind farms is losing clout

From NBC's Ali Weinberg

Even as major climate change legislation moves through Congress, fewer voters believe global warming is a very serious problem -- or even think there is solid evidence of it -- a new Pew Research survey finds. And action on the environment has slipped even further down voters' lists of policy priorities for the president, although a majority would not oppose regulations limiting carbon emissions.

According to the poll, 35% of respondents said global… Continue

Acoustics Engineers

If your town is preparing to bring in an acoustic engineer to discuss wind turbine noise. There are two that have previously made such presentations:

Ken Kaliski of Vermont. Pro- wind, spoke in Oakfield
Robert Rand of Brunswick, our favored man, spoke in Dixmont

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
