A recent article in " Maine Business " reveals " the general backlash against wind power worries him." " Him" is Governor Angus King. Governor, you should be WORRIED
When you were Governor, you often spoke of the strong, independent nature of the Maine people. Was this just rhetoric, a political ploy ? Surely, your estimation of the will of the common folks hasn't been "spun" by influences which would pronounce you as the savior of our planet.
Your partner once told me, after questioning his support for such a flawed industry, that he was not a "promoter", He was a developer. A good, honest statement and I will take this to mean his interest is in seeing the project is developed from a business prospective, not as a political statement.
You, Governor, on the other hand, have thrust yourself into the political arena, where you must be prepared to answer questions and address concerns with convincing arguments.
The people of Roxbury and Highland Plantation are focused on you. Your investors are focused on you.
You should be WORRIED. As Mr;. Lee found out, people do make an difference. Reddington Mountain Wind is dead. The wave of opposition to the Highland Plantation project is far more organized and encompasses more far reaching support than Redington realized.
You should be WORRIED. The people recognizing what destruction the Highland and Roxbury projects will have on the landscape are ready to fight. The people who recognize the irreparable damage these projects will do to wildlife, scenic values, and, yes, our " quality of place" are ready to fight.
You should be WORRIED. Global climate change is no longer a forgone conclusion. Fool the people once, shame on you; fool the people twice, shame on them. Maybe, it's time to stop fooling yourself, Governor.
You should be WORRIED. How much more is it going to cost to continue the project at Roxbury now that a one year delay is necessary.? Is natural gas prices going up or down ? There is word coming out that natural gas might soon be competitive with coal as a fuel for electrical generation.
You should be WORRIED. Wind power will never be a base load electrical generator, because it is too out of sync to demand.
You should be WORRIED. What you have undertaken in Roxbury has ripped that community apart. Will you succeed in doing the same at Highland Plantation ?
You should be WORRIED. Xanax, Governor? .

LI, they get together every year at their two big conventions. One is the National Conference of State Legislatures. The other is the Council of State Governments. As technicians in the laboratories of democracy, they consort and cavort with each other to exchange ideas in all poliicy areas. It is lots of one-upsmanship. Each organization publishes periodicals throughout the year to make sure nobody misses out on an idea. In addition to that, the federal govt sets benchmarks for states to hit, often as incentives to receive federal $. As in the ITC monies if they begin construction by the end of the year. Maine has 10.5 months to hold off the scoundrels by whatever means necessary.

Governor, you should be WORRIED, for there shall be no "king" with the authority to rule against the people's right to keep, forever, the beauty of the beholden land.

Angus King is the biggest hypocrite! When he was Gov., he never missed a sound bite or photo op to rhapsodize about protecting Maine's "special places". He championed the Fund for Land for Maine's Future, as has Baldacci. We spent hundreds of millions of taxpayers' bonded money (gotta count all that interest to pay!) to protect places like Tumbledown Mt. Now King champions the policy that will cause Tumbledown to be encircled with wind turbines, including his Record Hill project.
For him to develop an even larger project using even more hideously huge industrial machines on the doorstep of Bigelow and virtually on top of the Appalachian Trail is sacrilege of the highest order. When the people of Maine voted by referendum to save Bigelow is was touted as Maine's "second mountain", second only to mighty Katahdin. Truly, Bigelow is one of the gems of the eastern US. How arrogant of Angus King to destroy the viewshed with turbines so he can feast at the subsidy trough. Hypocrite! Destroyer of the environment! Defamer of Maine's "Quality of Place"!

No doubt. We see this all the time. I'm just not sure of the exact mechanism by which all the different states seem to get on the same page.

I'm sure the wind industry barrages them all with the same propaganda and many just adopt the industry's playbook. They all probably attend the same types of conferences and see the same speakers. They are all fed the same plan on how wind will solve all their problems. I'm guessing other stuff is disseminated by the Federal government.

For example, why is it that so many states' governors are running around mindlessly spewing that they are the Saudi Arabia of Wind?

Why do so many states seem to have a goal of 20% renewable energy?

The 20% goal is largely justified on the basis of fighting global warming. The funny thing is, if you consider that Maine:

1. Is 90% forested - the highest in the nation
2. Has low population
3. Gets an atypically high percentage of its electricity from hydro,

--- we are way ahead of many states in the ratio of carbon sequestered to carbon emitted.

In other words, that our governor blindly accepting this 20% one-size-fits-all cookie cutter goal that also applies to a high population density state with forest cover percentage in the teens is plain ludicrous. Quite frankly, much of the U.S. wind industry grew up in places like Texas where there's comparably very little forest cover.

And why does Governor Baldacci not allow hydro to be applied to the 20% goal???

Because we'd already be over 20% perhaps?

Isn't hydro renewed whenever it rains?

If Maine wants to do something that will count towards lowering emissions, it should weatherize its housing stock, said to be the nation's oldest. An old house can cut emissions in half upon weatherization and weatherization will employ Joe the Weatherizer as opposed to Angus the Subsidy Sucker.

Quite frankly, I think Angus is in big trouble.

The facts are the facts and once the public has them, King, Baldacci and others will be shamed if not manacled. The bad news is most of the public possesses few of the facts that we do. The good news is that is changing.

The scammers will shrivel up in the sunlight. Bring it on.

Governor, you should be WORRIED. the corruption becoming apparent within your industry will be the downfall to many of you. Promises based on lies will facilitate the demise of this ill-conceived program

What's the story witih your former governor who now promotes the wind business, was he a wind energy champion while he was in office?

I notice that States copy each other's laws and practices. Usually that's a good thing. For instance it's beneficial to a State if their corporation law has the best provisions and wording for the sake of a good business climate. Something similar is happening with windmills. Various State legislatures pass "wind energy zone" laws for the unobvious purpose of expediting taxpayer supported wind farm transmission lines.

They also tell the same lies. For instance, 'if we install a lot of windmills there will be a big new green energy industry', Maine will manufacture the windmills...lies lies lies. Another similarity, the cheerleader is the State's lame duck governor who will be needing employment after leaving office and it will be a lucrative job in the wind industry who is greatful for his service, to them, and in need of his government connections to keep the taxpayers pocket open--to them.

Here in Michigan we have a lame duck governor who is campaigning altogether too hard for green energy. I raise the question every chance I get, will the governor promise NEVER to take a dime from the green energy industry when she leaves office so we can be sure her priority is the people of Michigan, not her future employment? Until she says otherwise I'm sure that's exactly what she's going to do, Al Gore style. Former governors should be able to work after they leave office but how about an industry that pays taxes and benefits people rather than a business that consumes taxes and victimizes people?

They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
