MPBN and First Wind

I know this is a free country and public broadcasting relies on corporate underwtiters these days. But that didn't make me any happier when I saw the following company listed as one of their underwiters on their website.…

DEP Questions Fox Island Wind’s Noise Study

DEP Questions Fox Island Wind’s Noise Study

by Steve Cartwright

Fox Islands Wind used an unusual and possibly misleading method to calculate what area should be designated a “quiet zone” around its wind turbines, a state environmental official confirmed.

Jim Cassida, director of the Department of Environmental…

National Columnist George Will Unleashes Criticism of Wind

George Will has unleashed the following critique of wind in the 4/19/10 Newsweek. It's been on sale / in mailboxes for at least a week, so you may have seen it.

Excerpt:

"Meanwhile, America, which pioneered nuclear power, is squandering money on wind power, which provides 1.3 percent of the nation's electricity: it is slurping up $30 billion of tax breaks and other subsidies amounting to $18.82 per megawatt-hour, 25 times as much per megawatt-hour as the…

UMPI Wind Turbine Scorecard

It's near impossible to get electricity production data from commercial wind complexes. So it is refreshing that UMPI has pledged to the people of Maine to share the data on electricity production from its $2 million wind turbine.
For those of you who thus follow the UMPI wind turbine progress with the same fervor as your favorite sports team, the attached simple Excel file (UMPI Turbine Analysis) can be downloaded and will let you keep score.
Just go to…

UMPI - please provide project to date minute by minute wind turbine data

I just looked around the UMPI website and almost 11 months after the commissioning of the $2 million project I still am not able to see the type of basic performance data one would expect accompanying such a large investment.

You can read about the commissioning in the 5/15/09 Bangor Daily News at…

The Mahoosucs - aka "The Heights of Hypocrisy" - Shame on the Mahoosuc Land Trust

Mahoosuc Land Trust Accepts Dirty Wind Money

It's a very bad thing when a wind company destroys a mountain top for money. But it is arguably more revolting when an organization whose mission is "To Protect and Conserve Land" for "Unspoiled Scenic Views", celebrates the destruction of a mountain top for money.

Please see the following article where you will read how the Mahoosuc Land Trust did just that.…

I'm proud to be a NIMBY from Musquacookimby

Maine Voices: An activist discovers that it takes a NIMBY to protect the village

They are the people most willing to defend their territories, families and way of life.

KAREN BESSEY PEASE

When I entered the campaign to save Maine's iconic mountains from development, I had a huge dread: the fear of being seen as a "NIMBY" (Not in my backyard).

New Study Highlights Challenges Facing the Appalachian National Scenic Trail

The impacts of wind-energy developments are not limited solely to aesthetic considerations such as undeveloped scenic vistas. These developments often include high-grade access roads in fragile, high-elevation terrain, outbuildings, and transmission lines. They adversely affect soils (e.g., increase erosion or compaction), vegetation (e.g., facilitate the spread of invasive…

Vinalhaven Drive By Attack on "anti-wind activists" and the media by the Island Institute

I use the term "drive by" because there is no online forum to fire back with a comment. The author uses the term "anti-wind activists", but wasn't he the activist who created the problem on Vinalhaven in the first place?

Fort Kent Wind Group Denied Their Rights by their Town Council?

I'm not sure about this, but it sounds as though the town council in Fort Kent may not be looking out for its citizens who wanted an alternative wind ordinance on the ballot. The name of the citizens group is: Citizens for Responsible Wind Development, or CROWD

Rushing to the defense of the town council is Town Manger, Don Guimond.

A petition to place the alternative ordinance was presented to the Fort Kent Town Council by Councilor Joel Desjardins at its…

Carolyn Chute - Does this sound familiar?

If we are one thing, we are a diverse group - a federation of busy lives moving in every direction, but intersecting at a locus that repels those who would wish to take something away from us.

The following is from an article in the NY Times about author Carolyn Chute and her husband Michael. If someone knows Ms. Chute, please send out a call for help. The pen can beat back the turbine and help chase the interloping thieves off the land.…

Congressman Eric Massa Went Up Against Some Very Powerful People

With all the news on Congressman Eric Massa's resignation, I started googling and came across the letter below.

Massa has said on the news in the last 24 hours that some powerful forces in Washington, D.C. set him up and pushed him out.

From our vantage point, we know that he was a true thorn in the side of First Wind. First Wind is essentially half owned by hedge fund D.E. Shaw which paid National Economic Director Larry Summers $5.2 million…

Wind Turbine Syndrome meets Hollywood

Wind Turbine Syndrome meets Hollywood

“[Movie] sound engineers deliberately include loud noises well below the lowest frequencies that can be detected by our hearing system (20 Hertz) because, although we cannot hear such sounds directly, our body actually feels them. Studios apparently insist that theaters playing big-bang films be equipped with Dolby-type sub-woofers that can generate frequencies well below 20 Hz.…

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
