VINALHAVEN/FIW NEIGHBOURS:2011 YEAR -END UPDATE

Dear All:

Here is a review of important events of the past year related to neighbors of the wind turbines on Vinalhaven.

Last August, FIWN (Fox Islands Wind Neighbors) appealed in Superior Court against the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). For two years, neighbors of the Vinalhaven wind turbines fought for restoration of the peace and quiet they used to enjoy.

The neighbors sought to obtain compliance on the violation of state noise standards.…

A Thanksgiving message for all of wind warriors

As many of you know, a battle now rages in Island Falls that has taken the wind merchants by total surprise, where near 500' turbines threaten two magnificent north woods lakes -- lakes where the great conservationist President Theodore…

Published today in the " Mount Desert Islander" : Oakfield revisited !

Hello All:  The Mount Desert Islander published the following letter in today's edition, Lynne

Without even bothering to begin construction on the Oakfield Industrial Wind facility that was permitted by the Department of Environmental Protection in January 2010, Evergreen Wind LLC quietly submitted an application for a large expansion of the project. The new application would increase the number of turbines from 34 to 50, and…

questions for angus king

I  drove on  Route 17 , by the  Record  Hill turbines yeterday .

Not  yet  online, they stand idle looking like huge very  sharp needles disfiguring  eight miles  of magnificent  work of Nature and  piercing the  heart  of  all of  us driving by, bewildered  at a  reality  that  we  could  not  prevent .

Record  Hill , the second  project allowed  by  DEP under the expedited law .

As Angus  King keeps hopping  around the state telling  the  kind folks  of Maine that…

Physician calls for ten km setbacks in Australia

As  the  knowledge  and  understanding  of  the effects  of  wind  turbines on human  health evolves  and  deepens worldwide, the concept of the precautionary principle, which we addressed to the BEP in  our testimony for a change in noise  regulations, is a small but essential compromise Maine regulators and  legislators should give to the citizens in siting wind turbines.

Please read the very  comprehensive report coming from the Waubra Foundation in…

my comments to the BEP on The DEP noise regulations recommendation.

Dear Mr. Cassida and members of the Board of Environmental Protection,

I am profoundly dismayed  that DEP staff has suggested either a ' do nothing ' or  a rural nighttime limit of 42 dBA in response to the citizen petition.

The imposition  of  a  basic  35 dBA  nighttime regulation  eliminates contentious  occurrences and  protects  all  residents  from emotionally painful and argumentative encounters  with the  industry.     35 dBA nighttime would not require…

A good day
after the  losses  of the  BEP and  Law Court  permit appeals for both Rollins and Roxbury in 2009, valiantly argued  By  Lynne  Williams  and  Rufus  Brown, the CTFWP  had decided  at  his  February meeting in 2010 to start pushing for BEP  noise…

is the DEP slowly understanding the concept of cumulative impacts ?

hello  folks
for  those  who attended the Dixfield meeting on Saddleback  project you may remember that James  Cassida said  that after  the meeting it was  clear that the DEP would  ask for few more questions to Patriot Renewables. Following is the response from Mark Margerum to my email on this topic .

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
