A Thanksgiving message for all of wind warriors

As many of you know, a battle now rages in Island Falls that has taken the wind merchants by total surprise, where near 500' turbines threaten two magnificent north woods lakes -- lakes where the great conservationist President Theodore Roosevelt recreated on three separate occasions as a young man.

As we reflect upon this Thanksgiving, we thought the following words of Theodore Roosevelt would be apropos inspiration to all of us trying to make sense of the unjust and senseless battle we are confronted with.

"Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds." ~Theodore Roosevelt

“Much has been given to us”! Indeed, we have been given the joy of loving the state of Maine. It is truly a gift to inhabit a landscape where the hand of man has not yet obscured the creations of Nature.

“Much is expected from us “! Maine's mountains with their undulating ridgelines, its vast lakes and seashore, its humble isolated and beautifully unassuming small ponds, the infinite variety of wildlife that roam the land or soar the sky, are under attack from a ruthless and powerful assailant. We who cherish the grandeur of this place, and understand the healing and soothing power of the beauty of Maine are called upon to defend that which cannot defend itself.

“True homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and show itself in deeds.” Though we vacillate from anger to despair, let us remember our success will be measured by our deeds. Our persistence, our willingness to engage in the battle, and our love of Maine will be our legacy.

A Very Important Simple and Practical Action You Can Take Today
Thanksgiving is a time when many of us are with our families and friends, some whom we see only from time to time. Over the course of this long weekend, please consider spreading the true story of our predicament as only we can, given the media's overall pro-wind bias. And as a purely pragmatic plea, we ask you to encourage sign-ups on the Citizens' Task Force on Wind Power Maine website.

We cannot emphasize enough the importance of taking this simple action. The wind merchants repeatedly attempt to paint us as a "vocal minority" and when you get someone to sign up as a member (FREE), that person adds to our membership count which is on the site for all to see. We presently have 413 site members so the next big milestone will be  500. It may not seem like much, but every sign-up counts and Maine's policy makers know that for every citizen that takes such an action, there are scores of others who simply don't.

We are not a vocal minority and in fact we represent the majority in most localities where citizens have been forced to face this issue. Please don't let them depict it any other way. And if you have yourself not yet signed up, please consider taking this action.

We thank you for any effort you can make here.

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
