THE CLAIM “BURNING WOOD IS CO2 NEUTRAL” IS FAR FROM THE TRUTH

Vermont’s wood burning harvest was 354,462 cords, or 886,155 green ton for firewood + 347,342 green ton for electrical generation = 1,233,497 green ton in 2014. See URL.

WILL WIND, SOLAR, HYDRO, BIO, WASTE AND ENERGY STORAGE BE ECONOMICALLY VIABLE?

100% RE aficionados, almost all of them never even designed, analyzed and operated any energy system, claim wind and solar, and hydro + bio + waste, and energy storage, and demand management, and energy efficiency, and heat pumps and the batteries of electric vehicles will provide electricity, at a minimum of 99.97% reliability, 24/7/365.

They likely do not know it takes only 40% of all US primary energy to generate electricity. That leaves 60% which would be much more…

LOW-COST DOMESTIC PIPELINE GAS VERSUS HIGH-COST FOREIGN LNG

The RE proponents in New England are opposed to additional gas lines gas to bring more gas to New England, and are opposed to additional gas storage systems. They support the RE proponents in New York State and Massachusetts, who have blocked pipelines to bring low-cost, domestic natural gas from Pennsylvania.…

CONSERVATION LAW FOUNDATION DUBIOUS CLAIM NE ELECTRICITY FROM WIND, SOLAR, ETC., IS RELIABLE

David Ismay is an attorney at the Conservation Law Foundation. He wrote a commentary in VTDigger criticizing ISO-NE for making erroneous and overly conservative assumptions, etc.

https://vtdigger.org/2018/07/18/david-ismay-isos-sky-falling-message/

Mr. Ismay creates the impression the NE electric system can meet all future demand, including electric heat pumps for buildings and charging…

POLITICALLY INSPIRED, MARGINALLY EFFECTIVE, CORN-TO-ETHANOL PROGRAM

In the 2016/2017-crop year, the US had 85.8 million acres planted with corn, of which 31.4 million acres were planted to produce ethanol. The corn production was 14.440 billion bushels, of which 5.30 billion bushels were for corn to ethanol. The 169 bushels of each acre yielded 478 gallons of ethanol. Ethanol blended with gasoline was 14.80 billion gallon, about 10% of the gasohol fuel for vehicles. See table 1.…

LIFECYCLE CO2eq OF INTERNAL COMBUSTION VERSUS ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Almost all studies compare ICs and EVs, as if they traveled the same number of miles over a period of years. This is a serious error, because EVs travel, on average, about 9642 miles per year and ICs about 13433 miles per year, i.e., EVs travel about 28% less miles than ICs. The average annual miles driven by a driver is 13476. See Appendix.

In actual practice, EVs are mostly used for shorter trips, because of a lack of range, but ICs are used for short…

GOVERNOR SUNUNU VETOES WOOD-BURNING SUBSIDY BILL

Governor Sununu made a very wise decision to veto the two energy bills; one would have provided $90 million in subsidies to wood chip plants, the other would have provided $20 million in above market rates to larger capacity RE systems over three years.

These bills would have added about $110 million over three years to the electric bills of NH ratepayers. Most of that $110 million of subsidies would have been additional revenue for the owners of the wood-chip…

DAILY SHIFTING OF WIND AND SOLAR USING BATTERY SYSTEMS IN SUMMER

RE proponents claim New England’s nuclear, gas, oil and coal plants could be shut down, because the following would provide electricity service, 24/7/365, at a minimum reliability of 99.97%:

1) Wind and solar

2) Hydro + bio (mostly wood) + refuse + landfill methane

3) Energy storage (mostly batteries)

4) Supply management (including curtailments) and demand management (may include forms of rationing)

5) Energy efficiency

6) Utilizing the…

ECONOMICS OF TESLA POWERWALL 2.0 WALL-MOUNTED BATTERY SYSTEM

Much confusion exists in the minds of lay people regarding having wall-mounted batteries or not. The below article shows the homeowner cost is at least 32 c/kWh to own the Tesla Powerwall 2.0 battery for 10 years. After the 10 years have elapsed, the unit is returned to Tesla for reprocessing, because it has outlived its useful service life.

Some homeowners with roof-mounted solar systems think such batteries can be used to shift their excess midday solar…

NEW ENGLAND WILL NEED TRADITIONAL GENERATORS FOR DECADES

The ISO-NE reports, prepared by energy systems analysts with decades of experience, describes in great detail the operation of the grid during the cold weather period, with insufficient gas and fuel oil supply, and minimal solar most of the time, and near-zero wind on 5 days, and France taking advantage of the US by charge outrageously high prices for liquid natural gas (LNG), plus an outage of a major transmission line. It was a miracle rolling blackouts were avoided. Millions of…

GERMANY, CALIFORNIA AND VERMONT STAGNANT CO2 EMISSIONS

GERMANY

Germany, a major industrial country, is a leader in renewable energy generation. However, Germany made a significant mistake. Germany decided to phase out its nuclear plants, which produce low-cost electricity that has near-zero CO2/kWh, instead of replacing the plants. Germany continued to the use of lignite, a soft coal (low-Btu/lb.) coal, and hard coal. As a result, the CO2eq emissions have not decreased for the past 8…

ECONOMICS OF RESIDENTIAL ROOFTOP SOLAR IN NEW ENGLAND

Proponents, including installers of solar systems, present many numbers, usually in not too clear a format, to show how profitable it is to have solar on your roof.

This article presents a spreadsheet analysis of two plans:

- Plan A, the Standard Plan, which is to invest in a rooftop solar system.

- Plan B, the Warren Buffett Plan, which is to invest in shares of AT&T that pay a…

A LIKELY SCENARIO DURING A FUTURE WINTER IN NEW ENGLAND

If a cold snap occurred, and if wind and solar were minimal, and if gas supply (after being politically restricted) were diverted from power plants to residential and commercial buildings for space heating (because of very cold weather), and if duel-fuel gas plants were to have insufficient gas and fuel oil supply, and if a plant or transmission outage occurred, and if electricity supply via tie lines with Canada and New York State were kept at present levels, then rolling black-outs likely…

WIND AND SOLAR HYPE VERSUS REALITY

During the past few years, the media have often published about the decreasing prices of wind and solar. The lay public who reads these stories are intentionally left with the impression the more wind and solar, the lower electricity prices will become. The real world facts show it actually is the opposite.

Plant Closures and Economics and Politics

Since 2010, California closed one nuclear plant (2,140 MW) and Germany closed 5…

GREEN MOUNTAIN POWER COST OF ELECTRICITY, c/kWh

Green Mountain Power, a subsidiary of a Canadian company headquartered in Quebec, has about 77% of the Vermont electricity market. Some of its policies are to promote renewable energy, especially if significant federal and state grants, federal and state investment tax credits, accelerated depreciation, and low-interest loans are available to implement projects.

Such subsidies create the false impression these projects have short paybacks, whereas, in fact, they would not…

METHODS FOR DETERMINING THE CO2eq OF THE VERMONT ELECTRICITY SECTOR

The US Environmental Protection Agency, US-EPA, the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, VT-DEC, and the Independent System Operator of New England, ISO-NE, calculate the CO2eq of Vermont’s electricity sector. They use different methods and obtain results that are significantly different from each other.

In this article I propose another method, which allocates the NE grid CO2eq to each state, based on the percent load each state imposes on the NE grid,…

VERMONT FAR FROM MEETING CO2eq REDUCTION GOALS

Vermont Business Magazine reports:

“Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions estimates in Vermont continued to rise for calendar year 2015, increasing from 9.45 million metric tons CO2eq in 2014 to 9.99 in 2015. This increase puts Vermont approximately 16% above the 1990 baseline value of 8.59 and adds to the difficulty of reaching the statewide goal of 50% below 1990 emissions levels by 2028.” So what?

- If Vermont reached the goal of 50 percent below 1990 (two…

ENERGY EFFICIENCY FIRST, RENEWABLES LATER

The usual custom among energy systems analysts is to make projections regarding future energy consumption and work back from those projections to what is required to meet them. Following business-as-usual practices, Brussels projects a doubling of Europe’s energy consumption by 2050, and that 60 - 80% of the energy generation in 2050 will be renewable, but likely not CO2-free.…

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
