One month ago, on January 1, 2011, the UMPI website had gone blooey, showing no data, so as a surrogate for 1/1/11, we'll use the KWH recorded on 12/29/10 - 1,029,982. To see the 12/29/10 production, please look at the Excel screenshot dated 12/29/10 at

Rockland's Ocean Energy Institute Closes its Doors 01/31/2011 02:49 PM ET
The ocean energy think tank suffered a blow in August with the death of founder Matthew Simmons.
A Rockland think tank that promotes ocean energy, including deep-water offshore wind power, will close its doors today.
The Ocean Energy Institute was founded in 2007 by the late Matthew Simmons, an internationally-known energy investment banker. The decision to close the institute was made after…

I read this article in today's Portland Press-Herald and had to laugh that after years of Governor Baldacci and NRCM telling us that wind power will "help get Maine off of foreign oil", there is nary a mention of wind or electricity in an article about reduced oil usage. Of course the reason for this is that wind won't displace a drop of oil and the only things wind will succeed at is driving Maine's already high non-competitive electricity costs through the roof, despoiling our quality of…

The following is excerpted from an article in today's Maine Sunday Telegram. Bats are under serious pressure from White-Nose Syndrome. Do we really need additional bat mortality from wind turbine caused barotrauma?
"Biologists say fewer bats, which eat insects, could lead to increased numbers of pests, resulting in harm to agriculture and forests. It is anticipated that white-nose syndrome will continue to spread, partly because the fungus can be carried on humans'…

Ethanol isn't the only heavily subsidized energy source that won a multibillion dollar jackpot in last week's tax deal. The other big winner was the wind industry, which received a one year extension of a $3 billion grant program for renewable energy projects.…

Industrial Wind Action Group: AWEA's employment claims questioned
Data supporting the American Wind Energy Association's employment claims are spongy at best.
In 2007, AWEA touted that the industry represented 50,000 employees in the U.S., a figure that jumped to 85,000 in 2008. Twenty thousand of these jobs were in manufacturing but according to AWEA CEO, Denise Bode, this dropped by 1500-2000 jobs in 2009 due to…

On MPBN Maine Watch's "Wind's of Change" special, Part 2, with Jennifer Rooks, UMPI president Donald Zillman, the driving force behind this $2 million expenditure of public funds, stated "On a 1 to 10 scale, I give this project an 11". The reality is that this project has performed at an 11 on a 1-100 scale.
As in 11% - see the math below.
Again, 1 + 1 = 2, not whatever feels right to you…

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT
******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********
(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
