A Message to First Wind and the State of Connecticut

Photo: In August of 2010, Angus King and Rob Gardiner of Independence Wind (Highland Wind, LLC) paid a visit to the residents of Highland. Their proposed project had encountered stiff opposition from the outset and the developers were doing their best to sell the Plantation on their wind energy facility. They offered a $6,000.00 per household grant for energy efficient measures. They told residents if Highland Wind’s project were built, their taxes would decrease by 80%. They promised 500kwh of ‘free’ electricity each month. They even told residents that if they used their grant monies to buy a Steffes heater, they could get their electricity directly from the wind facility. They weren’t sure of the logistics of running high tension wires from the project to individual homes, but that didn’t stop Angus King from saying this (excerpt from a video recording of the meeting): “And this would—oh, by the way—the technology will be such that when the wind…that the, that the power for these things will come directly from these windmills. It will be wind replacing oil.” But the ‘tangible benefit’ which raised brows the highest? The owners of Highland Wind LLC made this offer to the Agency which would be determining the fate of their multi-million dollar project: “For the Maine Department of Conservation, Bureau of Parks and Lands: Highland Wind will provide $1,040,000 to the Maine Department of Conservation, Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL)over a twenty year period, as a “donation for land or natural resource conservation” pursuant to 35-A MRSA §3451 (1-C) (C).  Where is the Maine Department of Tourism on wind turbines???

 The head of the department must be hiding under his desk.

 Poor sole, doesn't know whether to speak his or her true feelings
