Maine Wire: Another $1.6 Billion Down the Drain - And A Huge Bird Killing Eyesore to Boot

NRG Energy, the company running this massive plant, has requested an additional $539 million in the form of a federal grant to help pay down the $1.6 billion federal loan just to stay afloat, and the plant has been open for less than three years.

SunEdison's CFO is Terraform CEO....HUH?..What?

The additional twist in SunEdison’s straitened circumstances is that the chief executive of TerraForm, the firm casting doubt on SunEdison’s ability to survive, is the chief financial officer of SunEdison. On the one hand, he is uniquely qualified to pass judgment. On the other hand, he may have some explaining to do himself."

PPH - TransCanada looks to sell Maine wind farm

More of the type of reporting we have come to expect that misleads the public on wind, including the old standby wind industry propaganda line -- 'the "wind farm" generates enough power for 50,000 homes' -- when in fact this is totally untrue. By now, wouldn't you think the media would know not to keep delivering such misleading information to their audiences?

Maybe a story would be in order on the collapse of the media's longtime pet company First Wind, now SunEdison and how…

I Wonder If We Can Overcome This Giant Polluter With Wind Turbines?

A volcano in Alaska erupted this weekend causing a plume of ash and gas up to 20,000 feet in the air.  It is interesting that it has done this almost 40 times in the last two years.  The amount of ash and gas spewed has to be far more than we can save with 200 or 300 turbines here in Maine.  Ironic, HUH?…

In Spite of the Promises of 2008, We Are Not Ready for Massive Wind and Solar in Maine or Anywhere Else

California, which is far more advanced than we are here in the backwoods of Maine, is trying to find a way to keep their grid from crashing as they fund more and more Wind and Solar facilities.  Their experts relate that it will cost BILLIONS to make the grid stable enough for renewable power and that cost will be handed over to the ratepayers.  That folks is you and me.  More traditional power generators don't need the massive upgrades, as their power is stable and constant.  In most cases…

Plant Trees not Solar Panels

Solar Panels are a Waste of Taxpayer and Ratepayer Money for the Environmental Benefits Achieved.

Solar proponents (https://solarpowerrocks.com/vermont/) advertise a 9.9% annual rate of return over the life of a 5 kw solar project, which costs about $20,000. Investors can claim a first year tax credit of 30%, or $6000. The electric utility is required to credit 5.4…

When the TV screen goes black, who are you going to call

Maine has plenty of hydro and biomass resources to comply with our own state renewable portfolio requirements for now and the foreseeable future. Maine has a problem with an onslaught of the variable resource wind plants replacing base load outputs. Removing the 100 megawatt limit on hydro resources would be meaningless to this wind onslaught as long as Southern New England continues to make large hydro ineligible for their renewable standards.  Their current…

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/

Hannah Pingree on the Maine expedited wind law
