Important Radio Show on Governor LePage's Wind Commission - 16 minutes plus written summary here

Click on the link below, turn up your speakers and listen to Jim LaBrecque discuss the status of the Governor's Wind Commission.

I just listened quickly, so I'm sure I'm not capturing every key point I heard, but with that caveat, here are some highlights:

- The commission is doing its work and contrary…

Blood on the Blades: Is Bird Life Facing Global Catastrophe from Wind Turbines?

My master’s thesis was on the mortality of birds due to powerlines and wind turbines in the special protected area of Alentejo grasslands in Portugal. The region is populated with turbines, and the great Bustards face considerable mortality from them.

Wind turbines have a special liking for raptors and can be blamed without doubt for their rapid decline in regions that host wind factories.

A 2018 specialized study on the impact of wind turbines on raptors concluded that…

First Wind spinoff Deepwater Wind bought for $510 million

D.E. Shaw, which got its start via a $28 million stake from former Maine Today Media owner S. Donald Sussman strikes again.

Orsted, the Danish company that is the world’s largest offshore wind developer, has agreed to pay $510 million to buy Rhode Island-based Deepwater Wind, the company that two years ago built the first offshore wind farm in the United States, a five-turbine array near Block Island.…

Facts We Already Know

Wind Gives Way to Solar Power and Natural Gas After Federal Subsidies End

The Canada Free Press published an article reiterating all the facts we already know.

1. Federal subsidies are due to run out in 2020 as long as our screwed up government does not extend them again.

2. From 2000 to 2017 the…

Get rid of all subsidies and renewables DIE!

Why is this of interest to Maine?  CMP plans to pull power they are selling to Toronto and Ontario to sell at a jacked up price to Massachusetts. Ontario will need that power if all the renewables die from lack of government subsidies! …

Trump's Import Tariffs Will Make U.S. Wind Power More Expensive

Tariffs on $250 billion of Chinese imports, as well as on metals from Europe and elsewhere, could raise the cost of wind power in the U.S. by as much as 10 percent, Tom Kiernan, chief executive officer of the American Wind Energy Association, said at a conference in New York. Executives from three of the world’s top turbine manufacturers agreed.................................

With federal tax credits for wind power winding down, strong growth is expected in 2019 and 2020 as…

PPH - Wind power can raise global temperatures, Harvard study finds

Ramping up wind power in America would also dial up the nation’s temperatures, a new study out of Harvard found.

While wind energy is widely celebrated as environmentally friendly, the researchers concluded that a dramatic, all-out expansion in the number of turbines could warm the country even more than climate change from burning coal and other fossil fuels, because of the way the spinning blades disturb the layers of warm and cold air in the atmosphere.…

LePage’s secretive wind energy panel, thought to be near death, meets for the first time

A state office also identifies the 15 members of the commission, which is examining the permitting system and the impact of turbines on tourism.

The 15-member commission includes three members of his administration and several noted critics of wind power, as well as a representative of the tourism industry and the state Public Utilities Commission. One individual has a background in renewable energy but there are no representatives of the wind power industry in…

REPLACING GASOLINE CONSUMPTION WITH ELECTRICITY IN VERMONT

RE proponents want to “electrify” the Vermont transportation sector. That means:

- Much less consumption of gasoline and much more generation of electricity.

- Internal combustion engines using gasoline, hereafter called E10 (a blend of 90% gasoline/10% ethanol from corn), would be replaced with electric vehicles.

For this article, it is assumed:

- Only EVs will be used to replace IC vehicles that currently are using gasoline.

-…

FLAWED EPA METHOD OF CALCULATING MPG FOR E10 VEHICLES AND MPGeq FOR EVs

The EPA has a unique method of calculating the mileage of an electric vehicle. The EPA calls its MPGeq. The method is a grand deception of the US public. It is used nowhere else in the world.

Auto manufacturers did not object, because they were allowed to use the inflated EPA MPGeq values to boost their fleet averages. However, when rosy EV sales projections did not happen, the “54.5 mpg fleet average by 2025” proved to be an off-the-charts fantasy, and auto…

Where would I find topo maps showing wind farm clear cuts for pads and esp. transmission lines.

If I had a map of the amount of forest removed for turbine pads, access roads, and transmission lines I can calculate the impact on the atmosphere, esp. loss of CO2 conversion, and on the watershed and aquifer.

This would be a focused environmental impact statement prohibited under current siting legislation; and if my early calculations are right, that the CO2 no longer removed by photosynthesis is greater than the carbon offsets. iHYDRO software and possibly the Canadian software,…

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
