U Maine Tells us of New arguments for clean energy

There is an article in the U Maine Student Newspaper. It is a plea that we remove ALL fossil fuels from our energy system, including vehicles, houses, business, etc, etc. I wrote a comment and it had to be evaluated by the editors, and after three times was rejected. Here is the comment and following is the link for the article. It is really obvious the University is teaching false science and not bothering to teach economics at all. There is no reality to education today. It is really sad.

Let’s Do Away With Fossil Fuels Comment

While it is very good for us to imagine a world in which there can be no use of fossil fuels, it MUST be noted that we would not be in the place we are in technology, medicine, energy, prosperity or any of the modern ways we live our life without fossil fuels.

We would still be living in a world like we were in the 1800's, burning wood (if there was any left) traveling by stagecoach and horse and buggy, (forget trains as they ran on coal) living on what we could grow in our own fields, having limited communication with the outside world and the list goes on and on. We can not deny that our new world we have created depends on POWER, power that can NOT be derived by anything short of fossil fuels and adding nuclear and hydro for constant, reliable, baseload power. Wind and solar are feckless and rarely there when you need them. It would take more solar panels and wind turbines than we have ground to spare for them. And the enviros call for STORAGE. Anybody know how much these extremely expensive storage units cost or how long they last? Anybody know of the extremely hazardous job it is to extract lithium and those other elements needed to make them is or how much pollution is involved in the extraction? Anyone know how extremely explosive they are if they get wet? And what do we do to dispose of them after their very short lifetime? Anyone think about the fact that these rare earth elements are really in short supply, a lot shorter supply than fossil fuels. And they are controlled by a very few countries that are not always very friendly with us.

While it is fine to talk like Pollyanna and believe that everything will be good if we can only do away with fossil fuels the world will be a cleaner safer place, reality is that we would be returning to historic times and forced to live without technology.

The real deniers are those that believe this nonsense.

Massachusetts A Wind Turbine Suicide
Florida, Massachusetts 2016
"I can't take it anymore, I don't know what to do, ... something must change"

John Clark Alexander, 66 of Florida, Massachusetts died Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at his home. He was born in Pittsfield, MA on September 2, 1949

In Memory of Jack Alexander

Jack Alexander was unable to leave the property he loved. Wind development destroyed his peace and tranquility.

His suicide should have been prevented if the DEP, BOH AG, governor, ... intervened to protect public health.

Jack was tormented by the wind turbine demons: audible and inaudible (infra-sound).

His last words to friends; "I can't take it any more, I don't know what to do, ... something must change". Jack died alone on a cold winter night at one of his favorite places beneath those damn wind turbines.

Brad, maybe I could write it and get it in the BDN as an OpEd talking about idealism vs. reality in the higher education system, and using the "climate change" argument as an example.

I think I see the problem here. A rather insular academic worldview vs a more eyes open experienced worldview. Oh to be young and naively optimistic again! But knowing how many raps up side the head that freshly educated academic head gets over the years and how much more adaptive to the real world the person becomes, I guess I will settle for my old age skepticism and world weariness. I'm a mathematician by education and was totally demoralized when I discovered certain laws only apply in certain realms of reference. Most 'proofs' are based on so many qualifiers that 'scientific proof' doesn't lend itself well to laying a foundation for broad political policies. Especially in a democracy where we're all free to be dumb and naïve and too often just plain stupid, no matter how many college degrees we have.

I gave up years ago getting comments into this student rag.  However, one of their rules for submissions is that a comment be no longer than 200 words (another reason why I gave up on submitting).  I copied & pasted your comment into a word counter and it said 349 words.  I know you will lose the impact of your point by editing down, but you might try.  BTW, you stand zero chance of getting an Op-Ed as an outsider--tried it, got rejected.

Since they won't accept the comment, I think I will write a rebuttal OpEd for the student newspaper.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
