PUC Denies Utility's Request to Build New Transmission Line

The Maine Public Utilities Commission has turned down Central Maine Power Company's proposal to build a new transmission line in the Lewiston-Auburn area.
State utility regulators have unanimously rejected Central Maine Power Company's request to construct a 115-kilovolt transmission line known as the "Lewiston Loop."
The three-member Public Utilities Commission determined that CMP had not made a compelling case for constructing the new line in the Lewiston-Auburn area, says Commission Chair Jack Cashman, in a statement.
"CMP has not met its burden of proof in this case," Cashman says. "The utility has not shown to my satisfaction through comprehensive testing or analysis that construction of the Lewiston Loop project is the most cost-effective means of addressing power reliability needs in the Lewiston area."
The commissioners said that a hearing examiner's report concluded that power needs in the area could be met with several other upgrades, rather than constructing a new transmission line.
The Lewiston Loop was originally proposed as part of CMP's massive transmission upgrade called the Maine Power Reliability Project. That project was approved last June, but CMP agreed to have the Lewiston Loop project evaluated separately.
