Falmouth Massachusetts 2nd Effort To Pioneer Wind Energy

Falmouth, Massachusetts will be one of the first locations where an offshore wind company uses high voltage direct current HVDC cable technology in the United States. The plans were announced on June 8, 2022, at a public Select Board meeting.
.
The project consists of two onshore HVDC wind cables between 400 and 800 megawatts. Also, an approximate six-acre site to locate high voltage direct current converter electric substation to convert back to high voltage alternating current.
.
As part of the 2010 Massachusetts land-based wind turbine goals, Falmouth placed two commercial wind turbines in town despite being warned each turbine generated 110 decibels of noise. As a result of eleven court litigations, they were removed in 2022. Tens of millions were lost on the installations and years of litigation by the town and abutters.
.
Falmouth is a heavily congested residential vacation and boating destination with five environmental justice communities. The project is industrial creating more megawatts than the output of the old Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant.
.
In order to build the onshore project the wind company has asked the state to bypass all of the Town of Falmouth bylaws enacted for health and safety.
.
Problems:
.
High-voltage direct current converter plants are very expensive and require constant monitoring.
.
The high frequency in direct current transmission systems causes radio noise in communications lines that are situated near the HVDC transmission lines.
.
Bonding and grounding are essential to prevent the flow of high voltage direct current through the ground of buried cable which can cause the electric corrosion of nearby metal such as water pipes or lead-covered communication lines.
.
Offshore wind converter stations are generally cooled with seawater. Questions remain about how a six-acre land site will be cooled.
.
High-voltage direct current infrastructures use deionized water as a means of cooling the  converters
.
The Cape Cod Aquifer is a continuous aquifer system underlying the Peninsula. It is the primary source of drinking water for Cape Cod. Its contamination from a high voltage direct current converter station creates a significant hazard to public health for all of Cape Cod.
.
Everyone knows everything made leaks there is nothing that doesn't leak. Falmouth gambled on the land-based wind turbines now will Falmouth Town Meeting gamble and become Pioneers on onshore wind infrastructure.

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
