Massachusetts Offshore Rebidding Shows Wind No Longer Financially Viable

Offshore wind contractors face financial challenges that threaten to derail and rebid East Coast projects as interest rates increase and inflation runs amuck.
.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities regulators on December 2022 according to four years of Massachusetts legislation approved contracts between offshore wind developers that would save ratepayers money.
.
Wind contractors want to back out of the contracts with the only option to have the state place the burden on ratepayers.  The plan is to renegotiate financing agreements to keep their projects above water and in turn, drown ratepayers.
.
The 2016 first offshore wind project in Block Island, Rhode Island promised to save ratepayers 40 percent on their electric bills. The five offshore turbine construction cost 330 million dollars. Incidentally, this project was the first series of Whale deaths that have followed ocean wind projects all along the East Coast.
.
In March 2023 an NOAA spokesperson, said 30 whale deaths have been recorded on the Atlantic Coast since Dec. 1. They were 21 humpback whales; three sperm whales; three minke whales; two North Atlantic right whales, and one sei whale. As of today over 30 whales.
.
Financing and whale deaths are the most recent obstacles to offshore wind.
.
The civil complaints show the fishing industry's view of offshore wind energy planning has failed to follow safeguards.
.
A major Massachusetts energy company is now selling off its investments in offshore wind.
Offshore wind faces backlash in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, multiple onshore cable routes are under consideration through residential communities against the wishes of homeowners. The power is rated more than a nuclear plant at 800 megawatts outside their front doors.
.
When comparing offshore wind to other sources such as small safe nuclear installations there is no longer undeniable proof that offshore wind is an economical source of power.

The denial of offshore wind will completely destruct the dastardly renewable movement in New England. Back the fishermen, the whales, the dolphins and the seals, all who are at risk of their livelihood.

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
