Rare earth elements are usually found side by side with thorium. Thorium is what is termed a fertile element for nuclear power production. Thorium nuclear reactors are inherantly many times safer than than curent light water reactors that contain fuel rods and control rods. Thorium is a power source six millions as dense as coal. We have enough thorium to power the planet for at least one thousand years without producing any greenhouse gases. None. Thorium reactors produce very small amounts of waste compared to current light water reactors. Thorium promises to produce enegy that is even cheaper than coal. This cheap power could be used to produce liquid fuels from air at the same time reducing CO2 in the atmosphere. The only reason that I can find that we are not currently using thorium reactors in the United States is that the thorium fuel cycle produces almost zero uranium and plutonium which were important in the fifties and sixties for making atomic bombs.
