When the Costs Hit Home, Nobody Will Give Up Fossil Fuels in New England

Here is what has happened in recent days in some of the bluest of blue US jurisdictions.
https://wattsupwiththat.com/2021/11/21/when-the-costs-hit-home-nobo...

In 2010, some twelve US northeast states, plus the District of Columbia, agreed to form something called the “Transportation and Climate Initiative.”

The language of the official document was all about “reducing greenhouse gas emissions”; but in practice this was from the get-go intended as a cap-and-trade scheme, which would use a decreasing supply of permits, to gradually FORCE UP the price of transportation fuels (mostly gasoline), and thereby force the people to use less of them.

The signatories to the initial document included all of the New England and Mid-Atlantic states.

The Boston Herald had an OpEd yesterday (November 18) summarizing the TCI program and its current status.

First, as to the intent of the program, and how it would work:

TCI would have capped carbon emissions by FORCING fuel companies, that exceeded ARTIFICIAL limits, to buy additional permits and invest those proceeds into green transportation and climate-resilient infrastructure. The aim was to reduce vehicle emissions by 26% by 2032.

However, gasoline prices are already up about 50%, after a cabal of Biden's anonymous handlers usurped power, using the highly fraudulent 2020 Election, to effectively commit a Coup d'Etat, similar to South American banana republics.

You might think the TCI states would be "thrilled and delighted", and would be plowing ahead, full steam, to increase prices still further, and force a rapid decrease in consumption; people would instantaneously stop driving?

However, actually the opposite is occurring.

First of all, only a HANDFUL of the twelve original states, plus DC, had moved forward to actually join the the TCI compact:

Initially, 12 states, plus the DC, were in talks to enter the agreement, but only Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and D.C. , eventually signed a non-binding, memorandum of understanding, MOA, by December 2020.

With gas prices rapidly increasing, which Dem/Prog politician wants to be seen as forcing them up still higher, especially with Mid-term elections coming up, and the Biden cabal having 35% approval, due to super-high inflation, and just walk-in, EN MASSE, open borders, and Change-Culture/CRT indoctrinetion of children, and parents pi..ed off?

Thus, even the few deep-blue states, that had been extreme-leftist enough to actually join the TCI, are now heading for the exits.

The Boston Herald reported Connecticut pulled out of the compact on Tuesday (November 16); and yesterday (November 18) Massachusetts followed:

“Gov. Charlie Baker has pulled the plug TCI, that would have capped tailpipe emissions and was projected to increase gasoline prices at a time of record inflation, admitting the multi-state deal is “no longer the best solution.”. He backed out of the TCI just days after Connecticut did”

A Massachusetts group called Mass Fiscal Alliance calls it correctly:

“TCI is a REGRESSIVE gas tax scheme that would have hurt the middle class, and the working poor, the most. It is wonderful news to see Massachusetts families will not be forced to endure ADDITIONAL economic hardship, that TCI would have inflicted upon them,” said Mass Fiscal Alliance spokesperson, Paul Diego Craney.

Meanwhile, New York is moving ahead. Its ignorant, RE-career bureaucrats are issuing various EDICTS “to end fossil fuels a few years out”.

Million of already ticked-off Voters will soon realize an RE cabal of Dem/Progs was about to take them for a VERY EXPENSIVE RIDE FOR DECADES

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
