UMPI turbine ten day capacity factor
Capacity Factor (CF) is a standard and meaningful way of measuring a generator's actual power production over a period of time. The UMPI wind turbine has an installed capacity of 600 kW, which means in a full day with perfect wind it will generate 14,4OO kWh.
Northern Maine has just experienced a notably calm 10-day period, November 14-23, and the UMPI turbine website reports net power production of 2333 kWh over that period, or 233 kWh per day. Divide the reported daily power output by the "installed capacity" (233/14400 and you get a Capacity Factor of .0016. A fuel-burning power or hydroelectric plant would typically have a Capacity Factor of near 100%.
I monitor the UMPI turbine website daily, sometimes a number of times per day. In those ten days I recorded no less than 31 observations of negative power production, and only 5 occasions when it was producing some power. There were many calm days, so the miniscule Capacity Factor is not surprising to this observer.

The UMPI turbine had a good 24 hours yesterday and last night. Its website reported 7523 kWh generated yesterday and overnight. Do the math: 7523kWh/24 hrs= 313 kWh average output; 313kW/600 kW installed capacity = .52 Capacity Factor. This compares to the dismal ten day 11/13 thru 11/23 Capacity Factor of .0013.
A number of observations yesterday showed output at or above the 600 kW installed capacity.
The website is now reporting wind 15 mph and output 200 kW.
