By Robert Bradley Jr. -- January 21, 2021

“The PTC is the single most expensive energy subsidy in the federal tax code and is estimated to cost taxpayers about $40 billion from 2018 to 2027.” (IER, January 5, 2021)

“Special government favor to business–crony capitalism–can turn losers into winners. And the loser lobby can claim progress and even inevitability as if they really won. This is the postmodernism of energy policy today in regard to the two politically correct renewables: wind and (on-grid) solar.”

It does not end. What is not competitive and government dependent just continues that way. This is not only because the market picks winners and leaves the losers for politics. It is also because the market-driven, non-subsidized technology improves over time.

Recently, wind power federal Production Tax Credit received its 13th extension. [1] Reported IER:

The U.S. Congress recently passed a massive spending bill that includes $35 billion in energy research and development programs, a two-year extension of the Investment Tax Credit for solar power, a one-year extension of the Production Tax Credit for wind power, and an extension through 2025 for offshore wind tax credits.

These energy provisions are included in a $1.4 trillion federal spending and tax extension package…. Despite billions of dollars in subsidies and state mandates requiring them, wind and solar power provided less than 10 percent of the nation’s electricity in 2019.

In comparison to the puny government tax favors to oil and gas in electrical generation,

Between 2010 and 2019, the American solar industry got roughly 211 times as much in federal tax incentives as the oil and gas sector, when compared by the amount of electricity produced. And the wind sector received 48 times as much as the oil and gas sector.

Fox News isn’t even among the top 20 in ratings for this week

Fox must be punished such that their inevitable successor will know never to betray its audience. And punish them all at every turn with your pocketbook. If it says "Made in China", leave it on the shelf. Any dollar spent on Chinese goods buys a bullet intended for Americans. If you find it on Amazon, remember they are attempting to destroy Parler -- spend a couple for minutes and find an alternative merchant.

I have a neighbor who lives off grid, same as I do.  The difference between us is my system is tiny, 480 watts of solar power and ten six volt batteries.  This is all I need, I don't use much electricity.  I use about two tanks of gas in my Honda generator to get me through the dark winter months. His off grid system  is deluxe.  Huge.  Including a residential scale wind turbine.  He has a huge battery bank, yet he runs a generator every day, four seasons, because his battery bank boiled dry a long time ago. Not maintained properly, and without it, he can't exist without gas and a generator.  Yet he was flabbergasted when I stated that the US goal of 100% renewable power wasn't possible.  A lively debate ensued.  I asked him to bring me the math that showed such a goal was possible, and added that using Manhattan as an example would be very enlightening.  And not to forget to add in the energy required for elevators, in addition to heat/cooling/lights/stoves/refrigerators, car charging, etc.  And I asked him to configure the size of a battery bank that would power Manhattan through five days of windless cloudy winter or summer.  And I asked him to configure how many industrial wind turbines and solar panels would be required to charge this battery bank, and the area that would be required for the installation of the turbines and panels, and not to forget to figure in the capacity factor of the renewables.  Long story short, he left in a big huff.  I doubt I'll see any real figures from him, but he did come back two days later, by snowmobile because that's how you access my off grid place now, and told me I should invest in battery stocks if I wanted to get rich.

Hannah Pingree on the Maine expedited wind law

Hannah Pingree - Director of Maine's Office of Innovation and the Future

"Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine."

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
