Many of the members of the Citizens’ Task Force on Wind know of the existence of the Friends of the Highland Mountains. We formed as a group in November of 2009, after Angus King and Rob Gardiner came to Highland with their plan to place industrial wind turbines along each of Highland’s five mountains.

Personally speaking, the ride has been a wild one. I’ve received an education, in more ways than one. I am discovering more about industrial wind every day; but the biggest lessons have been those learned about human nature.

Greed is a powerful motivator, and is the downfall of many. I am often discouraged to realize the depths some will sink to in order to make a buck. But on the ‘up side’, I have been humbled by the goodness of my fellow Mainers—those native to the state like I am, and those wonderful folks ‘from away’ who chose this beautiful state as their home. The Friends of the Highland Mountains consists of an amazing group of people from all walks of life, from different income levels, and with often opposing political ideals.

And yet, we have a team who is committed to our cause. A group of folks who are united in spirit, and who are working their collective tails off to make a difference in our corner of the world. And one of the projects we’ve taken on is our goal to help educate the people of Maine on the realities of Big Wind.

One of the tools we are about to employ is a video of our ‘story’. With the help of Tom Olds from Jackson, we have created a 23 minute documentary which showcases our beautiful mountains and valleys, and tells of the reasons why we oppose industrial wind development. Please check out our story on YouTube. The links are below.

If you would like to help us spread our story, or if you would like to use this video to help educate neighbors in your neck of the woods, please contact me for a copy. I'll send you one free of charge, and each can be copied without permission.

We’re all in this together. And together, we will stop the destruction of our iconic mountains for a foolhardy plan driven by greed.

For those of you who might have checked, part two of the video is temporarily 'gone'. I found a one-word mistake, and since we are doing our utmost to be completely factual, we re-recorded a section of the video. It's all fixed now... I've just got to find the new link address on YouTube and replace it with the one that's here. Sorry for the confusion... it's my fault. I'll make it all better asap. Promise.

Thanks!

Oh, and if anyone wants a copy for distribution, we've got plenty and are making more. Please email me at roomtomove@tds.net and I'll mail you a DVD in the next day's mail. We'd like to see this go statewide. To get support, we need to show the realities of Industrial Wind, and I think this video is a good place to start the dialogue.

Hi Dan... your note sent a frisson of anticipation through me... LD2283 absolutely MUST be repealed, and I believe a moratorium should be placed on all industrial wind developments in the meantime. I wrote a letter requesting that very thing and sent it to the full Legislature back in January. Three dozen or more Maine citizens endorsed it, too... just friends along the way whom I showed the letter to before sending. We need to keep after our representatives and senators, and encourage them to do the responsible-- the RIGHT-- thing. If you'd like to see a copy of my appeal to the Legislature, it was printed in its entirety in "The Maine Woods", the Forest Ecology Network's newspaper. Or... I could send you a copy.
LD2283-- an EMERGENCY measure-- must be repealed. I believe an emergency exists NOW... certainly more of an emergency than opening the fishing season 6 days early!-- and that warranted 'emergency' legislation last month. (What ails the 'people in charge', anyway?)
Let's work to get this fast-tracking of industral wind off the books. I would admire any representative who would stand up and say, "I made a mistake, and I'm going to fix it!"

Thanks, Dan. I'm hoping that we can accomplish something close to that... if you'll help spread the word or point people in its (or my) direction, we'll be on the right track. Thank you for taking the time to give a word of encouragement, too. That's priceless, all by itself.

Karen,
By far, the most excellent video I have seen. Every Mainer and visitor to Maine should view it.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
