Today we introduce a new approach to online commenting. As we continue to add more benefits to our subscription offerings, the ability to participate in online discussions on PressHerald.com will be for subscribers only.
Different from ubiquitous tools like “email to a friend” or social sharing, commenting won’t be a de facto feature on every story. Instead, we intend to use the commenting tool less frequently but with more depth where journalists can participate directly in the discussion or we can share additional insight into the reporting process. We are looking to create a higher level of engagement and reduce the volume of unproductive comments...........................................
To learn more about this change, please read our FAQs.

At a time when the U.S. newspaper industry is most often described as “dying” and “decimated” and publishers agree that “flat is the new up” with regard to profitability, a lot of eyes are on Maine.
They’re looking here, not because the picture is significantly brighter but because Maine’s newspaper industry is now unlike any other in the country. There’s not another state that has a single individual owning the majority of its daily newspapers, as is suddenly the case here.
Reade Brower. Photo by Patricia McCarthy.
In rapid-fire style – just three years – Camden businessman Reade Brower has acquired six of the state’s seven daily newspapers. The speed with which he’s done it is causing wariness among some journalists and others in Maine and an abundance of curiosity throughout the industry nationwide, about his motives and strategies.

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree using husband S. Donald Sussman's Wealth in Deal Making?
One would think that if you're a fellow legislator and Chellie gets you money, you listen to her on policy. Watch the lame duck session.
Her value to to the Democratic party, says Brewer, is also due to the help she can give to other candidates. "She is someone who other members of the party turn to for assistance, whether it's assistance in terms of policy or in terms of re-elections," he says.
Brewer says a key factor is the enormous wealth Pingree has access to through her husband - billionaire financier and noted Democratic donor Donald Sussman.

First Wind Holdings LLC will get a $117 million loan guarantee from federal "stimulus" funds to finance the construction and start-up of a wind energy project in Kahuku, Hawaii, the federal Department of Energy announced Friday. Once complete, the project will create "six to ten" jobs, according to the Department of Energy. At $117 million, works out to a federally guaranteed loan of between $19.5 million and $11.7 million for each job created.
Last year, when the Obama administration awarded its first windmill windfall of $115 million to First Wind, wereported on some of First Wind's connections to the administration:
First Wind ... had owners that included D.E. Shaw and Madison Dearborn Partners. Shaw is the firm at which President Obama's chief of the National Economic Council, Lawrence Summers, held a $5.2 million a year, one-day-a-week job, and Madison Dearborn is the firm of which Rahm Emanuel, now the White House chief of staff, said, "They've been not only supporters of mine, they're friends of mine."...

I cancelled the subscription as soon as my mother passed away, she had dementia and actually believed the paper! I've read and posted comments which brought the SJW's out snarling and name calling, which is the usual for the mentally destitute. The comments were a joke with a few that actually made factual sense, and the majority were bobbleheads that supported the article with blind allegiance. Not a loss their slowly going the way of the New York Times slipping into bankruptcy like a slow motion train wreck!
Cancelled my subscription. Ain't interested in rubbing elbows with the elite.
"We intend to use the commenting tool less frequently"
This is mere continuance of the direction the PPH was already heading. In the last few months, articles covering controversial topics were accompanied with the advisory that "Comments are disabled on some stories about sensitive topics." In other words, when the paper's Social Justice Warrior NARRATIVE would be slammed in the reader comments, the comments were shut down. The last thing the Social Justice Warriors want is it being readily apparent that most readers are calling the emperor naked. High time to speak out when political correctness says you shouldn't. That's one of their worst fears. Call them out on their lies.

Comments from subscribers only?
That is beyond stupid, as there are many people who are smart about issues and would make valuable comments, if it were not for the PAY WALL.
comments should come from all readers.
It would be up to the moderator to determine which get posted.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
