Wind Sound Rules Would be Lowest In Nation (Vermont)

The proposed rules set a standard of 42 decibels during the day and 35 at night.

They would also establish setback standards of 10 times the turbine height, so a 500-foot turbine, for example, would have to be 5,000 feet from the nearest residence or property line.

Stephen Ambrose, a sound expert who spoke at a PSB technical workshop in Montpelier, said the proposed standards surprised a lot of people when they were released.

"I've been working at this almost six years, all across the country," Ambrose said. "And Vermont was the last state that I thought would be the first to do this."

If the new rules move forward as written, Vermont would have the lowest noise standards in the country for wind turbines.

Ambrose said Vermont's proposed sound rules would go a long way to protect human health, and he spent about 30 minutes tearing apart how other sound studies measure decibel levels.

Ambrose was there to support Vermonters for a Clean Environment, a group that opposes industrial wind development.

The group's director, Annette Smith, said that while Vermont has been moving aggressively on supporting renewable energy, the state has not taken the time to really understand how turbine noise impacts people who live nearby.............................

Human noise pollution is everywhere, even in the national parks

These efforts aren’t just for the animals’ sake, the researchers say. “We have all this research about how important it is to our human health and well-being,” Buxton said, referencing studies that link listening to nature sounds with reductions in stress, improvements in mood and other markers of good health.

For years, the enviro-whackos have been telling us that the installation of wind turbines on our mountaintops in remote sections of Maine, places that are NOT protected by government sanctuaries, are of no consequence to the wildlife that lives in these surroundings. We already know that it has placed 35,000 eagles in the Denver Dead Bird Repository since 2007, and that is probably a fraction of what was never reported or put in dumpsters. We already know what it does to people living within a mile or so with the infrasound and blade flicker.
It must wreak havoc with the far more sensitive senses animals need to survive in their environment. While dark skies are important to people who enjoy the wilderness, the flickering lights and strobes on wind towers at night are particularly annoying. There can be no good reason to subject people to the aggravation of wind turbines and their minuscule output compared to the grid, but that has not resonated with the loony left or the government. Maybe by appealing to their love of animals more than people will we be able to get them stopped

If Vermont passes this rule, Maine should forfeit "Dirigo".  What a coup that would be, for people living in the Green Mountain state. The only thing better would be an outright ban on Industrial wind generators.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
