Politicians -News Media Misleading Offshore Wind Facts

The news media publishes news stories in favor of offshore wind generation.
Politicians depend on the media.
.
For example, "a 13-megawatt wind turbine can power over 6000 homes. "
.
This statement is the farthest from the truth and the news media is acting as sales agents for offshore wind.
.
Various wind speeds affect turbine power production called the cut-in,, rated wind speeds, cut-out, maintenance, and parasitic power loss.
.
In general, when there is no wind there is no power.
.
Cut in speed: The turbine blades as they start to spin operate a generator and do not produce a minimum amount of power until the wind reaches around 6 to 8 miles per hour.  (as high as 1 megawatt)
.
Rated wind speed: As the wind speed increases the generator in the turbine generates power on a scale from 1 megawatt to the rated number of 13 megawatts. For example, on an average day of 10 to 15 miles per hour, the generation is around 6 to 7 megawatts or only half the rated speed.
.
The turbine only produces 13 megawatts when the wind is 40 miles per hour or above.
.
Cut-out speed: When there are sudden changes to wind or high wind speeds the turbines have brakes that bring it to a crawl to slow operating during inclement weather causing blade damage. (No power)
.
Maintenance; The wind turbines off Block Island, Rhode Island were shut down for almost a whole summer for maintenance, and the submarine cables had to be reinstalled for years. Incidentally, submarine cables are the most costly for insurance companies that cover offshore wind.
.
The Nantucket wind turbine operation stopped this summer after a newly developed hybrid blade broke off. An investigation has been ongoing since July 13, 2024.
.
Note: The maintenance of land-based wind turbines was a fiasco. Turbines were sold to last 25 years but only 3 to 5 years later the gear boxes failed and had to be replaced every 5 years. Blade replacement was so expensive it was cheaper to replace the turbines.
.
Parasitic power loss: The wind industry and friendly news media always forget to mention that parasitic power loss can reduce power from wind turbines by as much as 15 percent. The turbines need power to generate power for air conditioning electronics, heating blades, charging batteries, turning the turbine into the wind, and anything else any kind of power plant needs.
.
Many environmental groups took contributions from offshore wind contractors and many news organizations accepted massive daily advertising from offshore wind improving their bottom line.
.
Because of political contributions from offshore wind to our elected officials you never hear that nuclear power is the largest source of carbon-free electricity.
.
Ultimately offshore wind is an environmental loser. The offshore projects are killing the fishing industry and everything alive in the ocean. The question now is how much longer companies provide insurance for failing offshore wind projects.
.
Alternative to offshore wind:
.
The only choice is the new safe generation light-water small modular nuclear reactors. These small reactors can burn old nuclear waste at power plants all over the United States.

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
