Massachusetts Drops Ball Again Offshore Submarine Cables

Massachusetts Drops Ball Again Offshore Submarine Cables
.
Massachusetts plans to achieve an emission limit to be 50 percent below the 1990 baseline by placing cables from offshore wind willy-nilly through multiple residential communities to electric grid connections.
.
Thousands of residents on Cape Cod in multiple towns and residents from Portsmouth, Rhode Island are opposed to 345,000-volt cables at 800 megawatts and electric substations in their residential communities. To put it in perspective the total output of the Pilgrim nuclear plant was 680 megawatts. No one in their right mind wants high-voltage cables buried in the street outside a residential home.
.
In order to move forward on this "unplanned" cable project Massachusetts politicians and state agencies have to allow foreign offshore wind contractors to bypass local zoning and safety bylaws. Wind contractors will have to also bypass Massachusetts Article 97 which guarantees a clean environment for citizens.
.
The first offshore wind project off Massachusetts called Cape Wind endured multiple lawsuits for years. Financial setbacks undermined Cape Wind's viability and was never built.
.
Today it's abundantly clear Massachusetts legislators should have endorsed a "planned" ocean submarine cable grid to the large cities bypassing residential communities. On January 2023 the Brattle Group, Inc concluded the planned cable route needs to integrate offshore wind to achieve federal and state climate goals.
.
Massachusetts politicians chose attractive willy-nilly near-term solutions using the "unplanned method." The Brattle Study warns unless submarine cables are run to large cities like Boston and Hartford climate goals will not be reached.
.
Massachusetts politicians over the years have had major renewable energy failures.
 .
In 2008 an East Freetown Massachusetts state representative agreed to pay $488,000.00 in restitution for not delivering wind turbines to customers.
.
Governor Deval Patrick had a goal of 2000 megawatts of wind power by the year 2020. The state today has around 100 megawatts of wind power. Because of noise many projects are curtailed at night and Falmouth was the first town in the United States to have its court-ordered nuisance turbines removed.
.
In 2011 former House Speaker Sal DiMasi was sentenced to eight years in federal jail. Dimasi drafted legislation called the Massachusetts Oceans Act of 2008 that required 120 wind turbines on Buzzards Bay.
.
In 2018 a former deceased Milton state senator next in line for Senate President faced more than 100 criminal charges including renewable energy related to corruption while in office but died before trial.
.
Today several offshore wind company contracts approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities are in doubt. The companies state their projects are not viable and want to raise prices and rebid leaving electric ratepayers on the hook.
.
The offshore wind started several years ago. Massachusetts is no stranger to wind power failures.
.
Without the "planned" submarine cable routes to large cities, the projects will end up in litigation failing renewable energy goals.
Massachusetts has a poor history involved in wind power.

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
