The 52-foot vessel F/V Mistress sank on January 1, 2019, during rough weather while returning to Point Judith, Rhode Island, resulting in the loss of the Captain and a crew member, with one survivor.
.
The Coast Guard ended the search after 37 minutes because radar clutter near ocean wind turbines made searching difficult. They declared the trawler lost.
.
In August, an environmental group, Green Oceans, in a targeted dive found the wreck and possible human remains next to Block Island turbine # 1. The federal government has been asked to reopen the case, which raises questions about the original investigation.
.
The song "Captain of the Broken Tide – A Song for Those Who Never Came Home" powerfully parallels a real-life tragedy of the F/V Mistress.
 .
While the track is written as a general maritime folk lament for all sailors lost at sea, its themes, imagery, and emotional core align precisely with the commercial fishing disaster of the Point Judith-based trawler.
 .
The direct thematic comparisons between the song's lyrics and the fate of the F/V Mistress show deep structural connections:
 .
Song Lyric / Theme
F/V Mistress Reality
"Inbound to the harbor" / "They said the tide would turn by noon... i kiss the dock. i touch the rail..."
Sank during an inbound journey as it was attempting to return home to Point Judith, Rhode Island during a severe winter storm.
"Sailing for souls that never came home" / "The sea took names the sea took sons..."
Claimed the lives of two family members, Captain Oscar Diaz and his nephew John Ansay Jr., leaving their families to mourn those who never returned.
"Leaving with the living ones" / "Left me here with the living ones..."
A single survivor managed to make it through the tragedy, echoing the perspective of a narrator forced to carry the memory of those lost.
"Where prayers had failed" / "Every knot remembers skin every wave remembers him..."
Sank directly beside a wind turbine (Turbine No. 1 at the Block Island Wind Farm), a haunting physical landmark that sparked intense federal investigation and community grief.

You can listen to the full lyrical lament here, which echoes the exact grief shared by maritime families who have lost loved ones to the sea:

.Stone & Shamrock – Captain of the Broken Tide | Official Lyric Video Description: Captain of the Broken Tide is a sea-worn folk lament about command, loss, and the weight of lives carried across black water. Told through the voice of a weathered Irish captain, the song drifts between duty and grief — where every wave remembers those who never returned.

Why Authorities Decline to Reopen the Case:

  • The U.S. Coast Guard originally closed the case days after the 2019 accident because the vessel could not be located at the time and search efforts were hampered by severe weather, high winds, poor visibility, and radar clutter from the nearby wind turbines.
  • Representative Seth Magaziner and federal reviewers stated there is no official mandate or new operational evidence showing that reopening the federal investigation would change past findings or conclusions regarding the search-and-response conditions.
  • Family members and advocacy groups continue to push for local authorities and federal agencies to recover the remains for DNA identification, though the Coast Guard has not formally committed to reopening the docket
  • In 2019, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) approved a 1-nautical-mile uniform grid layout for major East Coast offshore wind projects, aligning with the layout favored by energy developers to control submarine cable costs. This endorsement directly overrode persistent demands from the commercial fishing industry and maritime interest groups, who fiercely lobbied for a 2-nautical-mile safety buffer to prevent accidents, radar interference, and navigation hazards
  • Had the F/V Mistress been found next to Block Island turbine #1 in 2019, the ocean wind projects may not have been built .......................

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
