The question remains whether the U.S. Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter abandoned its aerial search for the commercial fishing vessel F/V Mistress because of turbine spacing and radar clutter from the five turbines.

The five Block Island wind turbines are spaced 1/2 mile apart. In 2019, offshore wind companies argued to keep the spacing at 1/2 mile. A single 220,000-volt submarine cable can reach $1,000.00 per foot.

Transitioning from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) to offshore wind turbine companies or the commercial liquid cargo industry is a highly lucrative and logical career path. This raises questions about the relationships between regulated companies and authorities.

In August 2026, a "targeted" search was directed at turbine number one by Green Oceans, a nonprofit organization that sponsored and assembled the privately funded project.

The fishing boat and remains were recently found 50 feet from the turbine.

Ocean wind turbine spacing is just over one mile today, but if the M/V Mistress were found in 2019 at the base of the turbine, spacing today would likely be two miles or more to allow rescue helicopters clearance from the turbines.

Green Oceans is asking to reopen the investigation.
