First Wind Frolics - If the taxpayers bought you a $115 million GIFT, would you still need to borrow $75 million?

The other day First Wind announced they were looking to borrow $75 million. The press release was apparently NOT released to the media in Maine. Maybe doing so would have frightened the so called Maine environmental groups who associate First Wind with giving them money.

http://www.pressherald.com/news/With_partnership_in_limbo__First_Wi...

A tale of Stimulus funds from four and a half years ago.

Another $115 million in funds for windmills went to a company called First Wind, which, I noted, had owners that included D.E. Shaw and Madison Dearborn Partners. Shaw is the firm at which President Obama's chief of the National Economic Council, Lawrence Summers, held a $5.2 million a year, one-day-a-week job, and Madison Dearborn is the firm of which Rahm Emanuel, now the White House chief of staff, said, "They've been not only supporters of mine, they're friends of mine."

Not sure they can count on this sort of taxpayer largesse anytime soon.

And not sure that ratepayers are going to buy the Maine wind companies another $1.4 billion transmission line (as in "Maine Power Reliability Project approved by Maine PUC at $1.4 billion over staff objection), transmission being a little detail that had been overlooked in the Expedited Wind Law.

And not sure whether they will be able to hire their next Director of Transmission by convincing the Chairman of the Maine PUC to leave the PUC to take that job. See: http://www.windtaskforce.org/profiles/blogs/maine-center-for-public...

Ever wonder why wind companies would rather pay more to lease the land instead of buying the land and the responsibilities of ownership?

When a project collapses and Mainers are stuck with the bill, there may not be any First Wind to blame, just a tiny LLC and large numbers of people feeling had, a scarred environment, deep rifts between neighbors and neighboring towns, higher electricity rates, a larger legacy of debt for our children and grandchildren and "leadership" at so called Maine environmental groups frantically wondering how they are going to replace any lost revenues.

The list of First Wind subsidiaries below is from a First Wind SEC filing on 10/22/10.

A few days later we read:

First Wind pulls IPO

NEW YORK/BOSTON, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Wind farm owner and operator First Wind Holdings Inc canceled its IPO after cutting its expected price range by 24 percent and facing investor skepticism about its balance sheet and wind industry financing.

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
