F/V Mistress: How Did Two Administrations Miss the Accident

President Donald Trump’s first term: The 45th president ran from January 20, 2017, to January 20, 2021.
President Joe Biden's term: The 46th president ran from January 20, 2021, to January 20, 2025
 .
President Trump labeled wind energy as intermittent, unreliable, expensive, and heavily dependent on government subsidies. His administration handled, behind the scenes, the issues of wind turbines interfering with military, weather, and "aviation radar."
 .
In 2019, offshore wind developers presented to the U.S. Coast Guard the following spacing specification: a uniform 1 nautical mile between wind turbines. The Coast Guard affirmed the requirement.
 .
On January 1, 2019, during a storm at the Block Island wind turbines, the fishing trawler F/V Mistress disappeared. The Coast Guard spent 37 minutes with an MH-60 helicopter; then, due to radar clutter from the turbines, it quit. Two people died. Donald Trump was president.
 .
No official evidence or federal finding shows the U.S. Coast Guard intentionally hid the location of the F/V Mistress to protect wind energy companies, but at the time maritime interests wanted 2 nautical mile spacing for safety. (Case closed in three days)
 .
Green Oceans and a private group of divers have recently found the F/V Mistress wreckage near the base of Turbine #1 at the Block Island Wind Farm. They analyzed the vessel's last known radio transmission, which stated they were "right below the Block Island Wind Farm," and mapped a straight northward path toward Point Judith, Rhode Island.
.
Green Oceans has asked to reopen the case. The Coast Guard Commandant, District Commander, or convening authority can reopen the case if substantial new physical evidence, material error, or unresolved criminal or safety obligations come to light. The boat is 50 feet from turbine #1
 .
"Under 46 U.S. Code § 6101 and  46 CFR Part 4, the Coast Guard is required to investigate reportable marine casualties, serious marine incidents (SMIs), and accidents resulting in loss of life or total vessel loss." The F/V Mistress case is closed as "lost at sea."
.
The U.S. Coast Guard is not legally required to reopen a marine casualty report or investigation.
 .
The F/V Mistress was found sitting just 50 feet away from the base of Turbine No. 1. That should trouble all of us and raises questions that deserve straight answers.
.
If President Trump knew about the F/V Mistress, the offshore wind spacing would be 2 nautical miles today.

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
