Blustering rhetoric doesn’t advance wind power debate

The comments from readers are better than what NRCM and Maine Audubon have to say. When wind-warrior environmentalists have to fight so called environmental groups to save Maine from these grotesque installations and their required transmission, the world is truly upside down.

The opinion piece by Jonathan Carter (BDN, July 13) on wind power and, specifically, the proposed wind project at Bowers Mountain, contained extreme exaggeration and inaccurate information, while also raising some legitimate concerns. We attempt to address these here.

Wind power does work to reduce global warming pollution, despite claims to the contrary.

My mouth is still hanging open after reading the 1995 article. I had no idea this all started that far back. What a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.

I went in to a meeting for an NRCM presentation, recorded it with permission, thinking to support the proposed National Park. I walked away in opposition (not expressed at that time) was asked not to release the video to the public as it contained (trade secrets) THINK  I am for conservation that serves the needs of the people, while providing long term non destructive sustainable jobs, however after viewing their presentation and comprehending their eventual goals for outside the park area, I will only say.... Another Pig in a Poke project...... with no real benefit to the surrounding communities, but a gradual displacement. So Beware, and  Think long and hard before it becomes Permanent in the hands of the Federal Government. More loss of control for Maine and benefits to citizens????

History will prove the NRCM and Maine Audubon to be liars and or idiots. In fact it is already happening. For example look at this statement...."Wind power does work to reduce global warming pollution, despite claims to the contrary."

While this country of 300 million destroys their landscapes and the bird life of North America for just a fraction of the energy that actually produces this world's green house gasses, the remaining 7 billion people are still cutting forests, burning wood, consuming coal, and driving cars with fossil fuel at an increasing rate. Another fact is that inefficient sprawling wind projects can never begin to replace these other sources of energy.

Yes wind can probably reduce greenhouse emissions by a minuscule fraction of a percent but it solves nothing and this non solution comes with incredible environmental price tag.  It is very obvious that NRCM and Maine Audubon are at the very least complete idiots.

The history likely starts back in the 1990's, for example:

CONTROVERSY OVER MAINE APPROVAL

Charges of political interference stem in part from ties between the state's leading politician and local Kenetech representative, Chris Herter. Governor Angus King and Herter have been friends for 20 years and were once business partners in a hydro project. Kenetech's Maine attorney also worked for the governor last year. State planning director Evan Richert argued for zoning changes as a paid consultant to Kenetech before he was appointed by King.

But the most eyebrow raising turn of events took place in June when King's conservation commissioner, Ronald Lovaglio, replaced LURC staffers who gave Kenetech's project a negative review. They had pointed out that the potential impact on the fragile mountainous soils and endangered birds were serious project flaws. Following the staff replacements, another LURC employee resigned, protesting against heavy-handed tactics.

Wondering who did the 'Past, Present and Future' subpage, if that person is still around to help update it. There's so much information and so many strands to the story that it's hard to keep up with it all.

If a timeline does not exist either in word or graph or a combination thereof I would assist as needed in developing such. Though I will have to defer to the Long-timers, being relatively new on all the history and articles that should be linked into this work.

It's always instructive to review history. In September of 2011, Pisgah was just about a done deal here in Clifton. While the commenters to this fall 2011 BDN article show that the basic facts about the costs and problems with industrial wind were known at the time, there was little success in common sense and sound reasoning prevailing. Can someone who has been there give us an abbreviated timeline run down of the significant events and players in this sad oddesey? (**spelling!!** ) The wins and the losses, the winners and the losers. Those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it. Forgot who said that. Forewarned is forearmed and all that.

I stand corrected on the BDN Closing of comments, I missed the date of the Orig article, looking at the header date. Though the rest of my remaining comment remains.

Wow..... Sure does not take long for the BDN to close down comments, when the Heat is turned up. Biased Reporting vs Investigative reporting again? Even the NREL uses (with a disclaimer) the industry's theoretical (or self promoting) figures on wind and solar. Trust the thieves?

I agree that In-fighting does nothing, though this turn of events was shocking to read it may have taught us some lessons. We need to get those statutes that allow this, (ALL) repealed and permanently sealed into a resounding (NO) with a You first, we assist approach, rather than Maine carries your load because you will not.

A time to Push and Push hard to enact new law, rules, ordinances. Not by request, but by demanding. After all it is "We the People" by which our government is allowed to exist and it is "We the people" that it is suppose to serve for our mutual protections. But it is also "We the People" that are responsible to maintain its quality of governance either from the top down, or the bottom up by requiring it to put Life before all else.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
