Biostitute Alert: wind industry bird consultants set to spew guano in Camden March 18th

Camden Public Library on Thursday, March 18, at 6:30 p.m.

Richard Podolsky, who has "a twenty year track record in helping “big box” developers, oil and gas, electric and renewable (especially wind), energy companies to reduce potentially adverse environmental impacts from a wide range of projects and achieve regulatory compliance" is going to speak at a Midcoast Audubon gathering at the Camden Public Library

Podolsky and co-worker Mark DiGirolamo together make up Avian Systems, Wind Power Consultants. These two cheerful fellows will share their experiences "studying" birds and bats at dozens of wind power projects around the United States. Astonishingly, the duo have never found a serious problem anywhere they were paid to check. The wind industry loves hiring these guys. They were consultants for Plum Creek in the Moosehead fight, too. No impact there either. They checked. Amazing.

Podolsky and DiGirolamo are "currently studying birds at the wind power project on Vinalhaven as well as the proposed project for Monhegan Island".

If you are wondering what their findings will be, I have a hint: 'He who pays the piper calls the tune'.

This meeting should be a barrel of laughs. can't wait.

Why would anyone not trust this man Podolsky?

Read Podolsky's filing (pdf) on the effect of Plum Creek sprawl plan on birds of Moosehead Lake area. His findings? Need you ask?

God, I hope so. I told my husband King was born in Virginia and he said, "Didn't we fight them once before?" Just a joke. Just a joke. heh heh

We shall tern the tables on them.

Here's what USF&WS thought of Podolsky vis Cape Wind , with his aerial and boat based surveys and his models. His measurements so far off reality its funny:

"United States Department of the Interior
FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE
3817 Luker Road
Cortland, New York 13045

October 27, 2005
Mr. Louis Coakley, Florida Power and Light

" While the sponsors chose to conduct aerial and boat-based avian surveys, the Service
recommended on several occasions, including in meetings on April 19, 2004, December 20, 2004, and January 10, 2005, that using radar technology was an effective means of documenting wildlife distribution and abundance in the project area, especially for nocturnal migrants. This technology has been used to monitor birds on other offshore wind energy projects in the United States and Europe.

"We disclosed the fact that, for the proposed Cape Wind project in Nantucket Sound, Massachusetts, radar equipment was able to detect greater than 600 times more targets than
visual observations and in a shorter time period (COE 2004).

"The decision was made after being informed of the much more complete data set being collected by radar equipment on the CapeWind offshore energy project.

"It was conveyed to FPLE that the Cape Wind project aerial and boat surveys resulted in the observation of approximately 210 birds flying at turbine height while the radar surveys conducted for the same project resulted in the tabulation of over 127,697 targets within the proposed rotor swept zone. This difference in data reflects the superior utility of radar equipment to determine avian abundance, location (including altitude), and direction of flight within the project airspace and potential impact zone.":

I got into this battle with big wind because of birds. This really ticks me off - big time. Somebody's going down when all the dirty deals about this wind crap are revealed. Orange jumpsuits are not green.

In the case of Baldy and King vs the Maine coast, I guess the old saying should be changed to: "No tern left unstoned."

Although there are some good, honest consultants out there, Podolsky epitomizes the worst. Most biologists have questioned Podolsky's work on Vinalhaven and elsewhere. Anyone who claims to 'guarantee permitting' to the wind industry before even doing any work at a site is biased. The state needs to establish oversight for environmental consultants - there's currently no certification or licensing in this state. We require it for plumbers and electricians! And we, the public, put our trust in what the environmental consultants say in their reports to industry. But the huge majority of such reports state 'negligible or low' impacts of the proposed activity which can't be true. They rarely say anything that the company wants to hear. Vinalhaven may face some serious issues - the UMO bird scientist group talked about this in their public talk last week. The final report for Podolsky's Vinalhaven work is not available on-line, but the interim report that is was appalling. If Podolsky didn't observe the almost half million songbirds that flew over the Vinalhaven region last fall, and include it in their report, one has to wonder at their ability to monitor any bird activity. And, these people keep citing the now debunked paper on the # of birds killed per turbine....it clearly shows ignorance. But wind companies like it. You should get the UMO bird group to give a public talk on all this. They aren't being paid by any company. UMO works for the public trust. I'm glad you posted this!

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
