Another example of Wind industry slime and deception with golden eagles the big losers - see images

In the past Altamont has averaged about 5000 installed turbines in service with total installed capacity for this wind resource area said to be 580 MW. As anyone can see  from the information presented below, the 580 MW rating is completely meaningless. The industry is using this vague and arbitrary "installed capacity" rating to greatly expand the Altamont Wind Resource Area without telling the public.  The industry is also using these bogus numbers to boost the reported rated capacity of the industry's turbines.

With a total of 280 2.3 MW turbines installed at Altamont, the total rotor sweep (Sq feet calculations) of Altamont could equal that of 9882 KCS 56/100 turbines or 23,837 of the early Fayette turbines that were used in the past. Altamont is well on its way to increasing its total square foot rotor sweep by 2-3 times, especially with 3 MW or larger turbines thrown in the mix. When total rotor sweep is calculated in cubic feet, the rotor sweep increases of Altamont could increase 3-5 times when compared to the rotor sweep of the turbines installed in the 1980's and early 1990's.

All this information is important because the big loser in this wind industry deception are all the poor eagles and birds being slaughtered by the industry's increasing  rotor sweep.   When calculated in just sq feet turbine sweep represents only a 2 dimensional picture of a turbines rotor sweep, like looking straight on at a paper plate.  Early wind turbine blade are shaped more like a flat knife.  The new massive wind turbine have blades are hollow, much thicker and much deeper than the early turbine blades. These blades take up far more air space and there is an increased  3 dimensional danger from these blades to eagles with their increased volume and curvature. All this increased rotor sweep is being  being completely ignored.  But without exact dimensions from the industry it is only a guess how many more cubic feet these blades sweep possess when compared to early turbine blades. My guess is that the cubic meter killing sweep of each of these 2.3 MW turbines is 50-100 times greater than a single 56/100 turbine. Look close at the turbine blade differences in the images below.   If Altamont sneaks in the proposed 3 MW turbines all these eagle killing rotor sweep numbers will be far greater.

Google buys Altamont wind energy to power Googleplex

"That problem is expected to lessen with the new machines, which will be more carefully situated, far fewer in number and spin at higher elevations. NextEra's new project, called Golden Hills Wind, lies just south of I-580 and is part of a much larger initiative to decommission more than 4,000 turbines on the Altamont and repower the hills with up to 280 more bird-friendly machines." http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_27503195/google-buys-altamon...;

Altamont past and present wind turbine blade swept- Meters per one rated kW

These were non eagle  killing turbines.  With these Vestas turbines, 45546 sq meters of eagle safe rotor sweep became 53756 square meters of new eagle slaughter.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     The New Generation Altamont turbines

Mitsubishi 1000kW........... square meters swept per one kW    2.96

Suzlon 2100kW.................. square meters swept per one kW  3.52         when compared to the KCS 56/100 this turbine is equivalent to a 3.25 MW turbine

Siemens 2300kW  ............. square meters swept per one kW  3.48        99 Siemens 2.3 MW turbines equal the total rotor sweep of 3500 KCS 56/100kW turbines or 8392  Fayette 95kW  turbines. In other words a Siemens 2.3 MW turbine is really a 3.5 MW turbine when compared to the KCS 56/100.

Suzlon 3300kW..................square meters swept per one kW   3.54

With a 122 meter blade diameter the Suzlon 3 .0 MW turbine is really a 5.1 MW wind turbine when compared to the KCS 56-100. The KCS 56/100 has been the Altamont workhorse for about 25 years. The Suzlon 3 .0 MW turbine has a 11684 square meter rotor sweep or the equivalent of 51 KCS 56-100 turbines with 227 square meters each. It takes 70 of these turbines to equal 3500 KCS 56/100kW turbines or 8392  Fayette 95kW  turbines.  In other words a Siemens 3 MW turbine is really a 5.1 MW turbine when compared to the kcs56/100

When looking at this image it is easy to understand the three dimensional dangers these blades pose for eagles.  Over 100 of the KCS 56-100 blades from an early 100 kW turbine can easily fit inside one of the huge blades from a 2.3 MW turbine. This particular blade happens to be from a larger turbine and I would estimate that 300-400 of the KCS 56-100 blades could actually fit inside.

Had an interview with a National News source today concerning wind industry fraud and the concealment of eagle carcasses. We will see if the info gets out.  As for the use of the bird safe FloDesign turbine, the longer it stays on the back burner the more money the industry rakes in. And if you own it, you do not have to produce it.

Thank you, Jim W., for all the work you're doing to defend wildlife harmed by wind turbines!!!

My comment has less to do with what model turbines developers use, but more to do with what business model Enron uses.

Please take a look at OGIN INC., repowering Altamont, and the story of their shrouded wind turbine.

Did they file for bankruptcy protection back in the 1970s?

Are they now dumping their junk, intellectual property of Montenegrin, funded (multi-millions), by U.S. citizens, in CA?

FloDesign Inc., and FlowDesign Wind Turbine Corp., is a Massachusetts Foreign Corporation(s) with a name change during November of 2013 to “Ogin Inc.” based in the Netherlands; and, New Dimension Energy Company, LLC (NDEC) a California Foreign Limited Liability Company (LLC) and subsidiary of Ogin, Inc.

Note OGIN subsidiary is New Dimension Energy-, and that-

Alphabiota Environmental Consulting, LLC (AEC) understands that New Dimension

Energy Company (NDEC, Project Applicant) is proposing the repower of wind energy

facility within the Alameda County portion of the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area

RED FLAG-

My research shows two federal stimulus $8,325,400 awards to two different Congressional Districts, to two versions of FloDesign, each having a separate DUNS (company ID) number.

RED FLAG-

MassCEC also granted FloDesign $3 million in grants while Ian Bowles served as Advisor to FloDesign while serving as MA Executive Secretary of Energy and Environment and as Chairman of the MassCEC under the MA Deval Patrick Administration.

During 2010, Ian Bowles, Founding Chairman and acting Chairman of the Board of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, MassCEC, granted FloDesign $3 million, including a 5-year $700,000 forgivable loan, and $1.7 million from MassCEC’s Renewable Energy Trust.  The term expired in 2015...but the debt is Flow Wind now Ogins's???

But Ogin (greed) came back for more (graft)!

During November of 2013 FloDesign changed their name to Ogin. MassCEC then granted a share of $2.3 million to Ogin.

 2014

Since 2010, MassCEC has provided over $2.3 million in matching funds to seven Massachusetts-based ARPA-E awardees, including 1366 Technologies, Ogin, FastCAP, MIT and INFINIUM. Awardees have gone on to raise more than $290 million in additional funding, and hire more than 280 employees.

What relationship exists between FlOWIND that operated wind plants in San Rafael, CA (shrouded wind turbines) and FlOWIND, FLODESIGN, or OGIN (shrouded wind turbines)?

FLOWIND CORP. FILES FOR

BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION

FloWind Corp., a major wind plant operator based in San

Rafael, Calif., said in a statement that it has filed for

protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy

Code due to "difficulties in liquidating its wind turbine

inventories or repowering or selling its wind power plants

in a timely fashion."

The company said it had accumulated an inventory of

components for the AWT-27 wind turbine (designed and

produced by a subsidiary, Advanced Wind Turbines, Inc.)

after receiving an order from customers in India, but that

the customers subsequently proved "unable to make required

payments.

"Subsequent attempts to sell this inventory to

alternative buyers have been frustrated by the absence of

international trade financing competitive with the

concessionary financing and trade support offered by foreign

competitors," the company said, adding, "Approximately 20

AWT turbines are operating in India and two in China.  The

wind turbines are operating as warranted and are considered

reliable and cost-effective."

FloWind said it expects to use the balance of the AWT

inventory to supply turbines for the 25-MW wind project

planned by the Conservation and Renewable Energy System

(CARES), a consortium of several public utilities, in

Washington.

The company said it has attempted to sell its Tehachapi wind plant in recent months, but has been unable to finalize a sale.

It added, "Immediately prior to the Chapter 11 filing,

FloWind entered into a codevelopment arrangement with a

European turbine manufacturer and its construction partner

to fully develop its Altamont and Tehachapi wind power

plants.  This arrangement is expected to be finalized over

the next 18 months.

"The repowering and sale of its existing California

wind power plants, with the aid and credibility of its

codevelopment partner, will allow FloWind to emerge as a

vital contributor to the international wind energy

community."

There's no such thing as a bird friendly wind turbine.  How can people buy that BS?  Are they the same people who believe in clean coal?  When did critical thinking become a crime?

Jim -  am awaiting information from LUPC on bird kills at Bull Hill Project. The neighboring Weaver wind project has been on hold because of Bird kills - I knew something was wrong 2 years before the state announced there were too many bird kills. I used to listen to the songbirds at our lake cottage every morning - And then the singing stopped! It breaks my heart!

And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
