Angus king , your prediction of Maine becoming an uninhabitable land has not happened yet !

I quote : "Oil could realistically cost $300 a barrel in 2020 " and " filling your gas tank will be $ 200 and your basement $2ooo "  "Maine with its cold weather will be uninhabitable "
Kings lecture came at a historical time  , indeed two weeks later Governor Baldacci would sign into law the now infamous  " Expedited Wind Law" .....which drew large support of the environmental community and wind industry.
This was 7 years ago , it is amazing how a review of history within the current economical and geopolitical landscape can be enlightening.
Oil prediction prices are difficult but certainly creating an emergency law in 2008 is proven today totally absurd . Turbines erected in Mars hill,  Beaver ridge. Kibby, Rollins , Vinalhaven, Roxbury , spruce Mt  will have run their useful lives  even if oil prices would escalate drastically in few years and oil being not used to produce electricity , this is a moot point .

I do appreciate the vibrancy of all the comments to my post, in fact I have wanted to make this point for a long time after having heard so many absurdities, designed to justify the Expedited Wind law, for so long while meeting with Maine officials for years : from Karin Tilberg  ( Baldacci  senior policy analyst): " But Monique the planet is dying ", from Richard Jenkins, MD , at a meeting of the Maine Medical Association in 2008: " If we do not do anything,in ten years Maine will burn " , from Elaine Theberge from NRCM : 'Your generation has destroyed the planet, we must fix it ", From Lisa Pohlman  from NRCM : " It is better to put 500 feet wind turbines on Maine mountains so we can stop the coal mining operations in West Virginia " ,from Robert Gardiner, partner of Angus King In Record Hill LLC who testified in front of the Governor Task Force  regarding scenic that " Cristo would love to see steel  turbines erected on mountains and that wind developers would be jealous of him " and on and on, arguments with no relevancy to the goal of 1800 wind turbines on Maine mountains with a total capacity of around 4.5 % of the grid, conveniently  ignoring the low hanging fruit of better insulation which would  neuter out the need for those electrons.

But the worse was indeed Angus because of his immense popularity, his theatricals and bullet points ( we need to decrease our dependence from "those people who do not love us that much,  at the  Chamber of Commerce  breakfast meeting in Bethel in 2012 ) , " Maine  is the Saudi Arabia of wind" or to the people of Roxbury where he equated the changing of their ordinance as a patriotic act , and last but not least his determination to see this happen because of his own financial interest in the matter .

It is time for the Legislature to truly request a moratorium on the Law , they would have an easy argument : in fact the Wind Law , regarding emission saving ,left  it to the Legislature to assess whether the presumption of emission reduction were real or not . They have not done this yet and . A perfect argument to put a moratorium on the law until such disposition are taken and accomplished  !.

Back in the 70's the doomsday prophecy was another ice age.  The gov was considering spreading coal dust on the ice at the north pole to warm things up.  The sky is always falling.  When I grew up it was the threat of nuclear war with Russia and we kids were trained to hide under our desks at school.  Now kids are taught to fear the weather/climate.

Generally speaking, the Ecofantasists have an exhaustible appetite for disaster scenarios and no memory at all.  Angus is not a deep thinker but he understands the science of doomsday prophecy, i.e., when your previous prediction collapses be ready with a new one.

I wonder if Angus took his Magic Crystal Ball with him to DC?

And we'll need more jobs as wind power and the new transmission lines it requires increase rates for businesses, already dismissing Maine as a place to do business due to its suffocating energy rates and taxes. The perhaps two permanent jobs that come with each wind project won't make a dent in a state of 1.3 million. Meanwhile, one of Maine's key industries, tourism, is being placed in ever greater jeopardy as this industrialization sprawls through the state. Ask the folks who own camps on the Lincoln Lakes to tell you about the lifelong visitors who stopped returning after their first experience with the turbine noise. Shame on everyone who has sold Maine out - in the legislature, in the paid off environmental groups and most sadly, in the media.

Comment by Steve Thurston on June 5, 2015 at 6:55pm

Its confounding how the argument for wind in Maine has morphed from "saving the dying planet"  into "we need the jobs".   The wind industry and its political supporter are adept at the Saul Alinsky rule, "when your argument is successfully attacked, change your argument".

Yeh, life is good when you're an attorney/politician who knows how to scam the public, get away with it and move on, with your saddlebags of stolen money into the sunset. Angus' latest bullsh-t is that he is supporting/sponsoring legislation now circulating in the corrupt U.S. Congress which would open up even more of America's public lands for sport killing and torture trapping of the continent's already besieged native wildlife. Angus can't seem to get enough of despoiling America's natural heritage, in Maine and around the country, for blood and money. The extremists at the SportKillers Association of Maine (SAM) know that Angus is always with them in their never ending quest to persecute and kill wildlife for kicks, while calling their sick behavior part of some 'great tradition.' Ed Muskie must be rolling in his grave at his pathetic successors.

Robert , do not worry , Angus King is a very adaptable individual. At one  of his campaign stops for US senator in Lewiston (I was there ) , he said " Natural Gas is America second chance " ....not a word on wind.

Please read his address after being assigned on energy committee as senator:

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
