Rigging data for excessive wind energy Tax credit's part 1.........................

Tax credits are being figured from the energy claimed to have been produced at wind farms. These credits do not take into consideration the energy used by these wind facilities.  So not only does it appear that energy produced by wind farms is being embellished by about 33% they do not have to account for the energy purchased to keep the wind farms running when filing with the IRS for tax credits.

Eric Rosenbloom .................."On top of this uselessness, the turbines use a great deal of electricity themselves. Most of them cannot even run without input from the grid. Although they produce electricity intermittently, they consume it continuously. In every report I've seen, input from the grid is not accounted for in the figures of net output. Specifications from turbine manufacturers do not include the amount of electricity they require.

It may be that large wind turbines use as much electricity as they produce. Whether the wind is blowing in the desired range or not, they need power to keep the generator magnetized, to keep the blade and generator assembly (92 tons on a 1.5-MW GE) facing the wind, to periodically spin that assembly to unwind the cables in the tower, to heat the blades in icy conditions, to start the blades turning when the wind is just getting fast enough to keep them going, to keep the blades pitched to spin at a regular rate, and to run the lights and internal control and communication systems.

It is clear that industrial wind generation is not able to contribute anything against the problems of global warming, pollution, nuclear waste, or dependence on imports. In Denmark, with the most per-capita wind turbines in the world, the output from wind facilities equals 15%-20% of their electricity consumption. The Copenhagen newspaper Politiken reported, however, that wind provided only 1.7% of the electricity actually used in 1999. The grid manager for western Denmark reported that in 2002 84% of their wind-generated electricity had to be exported, i.e., dumped at extreme discount. The turbines are often shut down, because it is so rare that good wind coincides with peaking demand. A director of the western Denmark utility has stated that wind turbines do not reduce CO2 emissions, the primary marker of fossil fuel use.

But industrial wind facilities are not just useless. They destroy the land, birds and bats, and the lives of their neighbors. Off shore, they endanger ships and boats and their low-frequency noise is likely harmful to sea mammals. They require subsidies and regulatory favors to make investment viable. They do not move us towards more sustainable energy sources and stand instead as monuments of delusion."

Nor is the value of the lost forest's ability to remove carbon and sequester it deducted from the carbon credits. MTM has been negligent in not including this in their proposed legislation or in their various campaigns.

The wind farmer is NOT REQUIRED to do a habitat study which would indicate how much biomass is removed for pads, transmission lines and access roads. Were this done, one could measure the negative impact on lost CO2 conversion, lost renewables, i.e. wood, and secondary losses like animal/bird/insect habitat and lost air pollution removal.

Best of all, this impact can be precisely calculated with the scientifically validated i-TREE software:

“Trees reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere by sequestering carbon in new growth every year. The amount of carbon annually sequestered is increased with the size and health of the trees. The gross sequestration of Adrian trees is about 1,450 metric tons of carbon per year with an associated value of $114 thousand. Net carbon sequestration in the urban forest is about 528 metric tons. Carbon storage and carbon sequestration values are calculated based on $78 per metric ton.”

In short, wind energy was promoted as a means to reduce the CO2 generated by the fossil-fueled plants; and as such was worthy of a variety of subsidies and 'fast track' permitting.

And this is the reply of DEP:

"Mr. Heller,

The Draft (siting) Order is based on the relevant review standards found in the Wind Energy Act, Natural Resources Protection Act and the Site Location of Development Law.  The Department does not have any review standards relating to loss of forest on to convert CO2 into oxygen, therefore we are unable to perform such an analysis.

Dan Courtemanch, Environmental Specialist
Maine Department of Environmental Protection"

Sorry. I didn't read the second part of the post. That outlines many other wastes these towers produce.

There is one very important factor of grid consumption that was left off the list. The turbine housings are filld with OIL that lubricates the gears. In our harsh Maine winters there is a need for that oil to be heated or the blades will not turn. That takes energy from the grid. In the summer's heat that same oil needs to be cooled so it takes cooling, whiich also comes from the grid. This is in addition to all the other drains on the grid they do not really contribute to.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
