$2.5 million conservation fund set up in Bingham wind pact

An agreement reached between Friends of Maine Mountains and developer SunEdison will provide $2.5 million to conservation projects statewide.  I hope this turns out to be a positive agreement for Maine.  I'm not sure any of these projects have enough salted away for decommissioning should it become necessary.  I'm afraid we will be saddled with enormous behemoths for as long as we can see.

Had we read the news then we might have a right to pipe off about it.  Armchair quarterbacks abound.

Oh.. Great. Until such time they Tweak the laws once again...... Is that certainty guaranteed. By Maine "Maybe" but did the Feds? Under National Security needs?

Yep... that'll work.

"Additional terms of the agreement are that SunEdison will not use some sections of Maine for wind farms, ..."

Perhaps Mr. O'Neil or Mr. Stowell can enlighten us with a copy of this agreement.  Just what sections of Maine are now of limits that weren't before this agreement?  Does it cover all of the key quality of place locations in Maine, or just those abutting or in close proximity to the AT?  At least show us the details of this wonderous settlement you signed.  Some of us are interested in the details not just a headline.

"Nobody got sold".  Chris that's BS and you now it.  You and Rand sold out all of the other wind power groups when FMM took $X00,000. to walk away from the Saddleback lawsuit, and now this latest sellout.  I remember the day when you would denounce and badmouth other non-profits such as Maine Audubon, the ATC, AMC, and others who have in the past done just what FMM has done - accept "mitigation' money to walk away from the fight.  Now FMM has become more egregious than all the others put together as you continue to follow their model while also trying to claim you are the voice of those fighting wind in Maine.  You are not, and never have been the umbrella group that speaks for all other Maine anti-wind groups.  There was a time when Rand agreed to restructure FMM in order to accommodate it becoming an umbrella group, but you personally fought that tooth and nail because it threatened your personal power structure and ego.  Enough is enough.

Nobody got sold.

I certainly didn't sell everyone out to SE/FW.

What did you do Richard?

More bs, school yard stuff from one of O'Neil's many identities. Next we'll be hearing more glowing bs from arthur123. There's not enough lipstick to paint this pig of a deal.

Wait a minute.  Wind developer applies for permit.  Anti wind group attempts to spawn a local opposition group.  Nobody can be bothered.  Anti wind group is the only opponent with standing.  Permit is granted easily because wind developer knows the ropes now, and the criteria are so easy.  Anti wind group appeals permit.  All of their appeal objections are eviscerated by DEP staff.  Wind developer with permit in hand gives concessions that are broadly good for Maine.  Now as in the Little Red Hen fable, people complain?  People ask who gave permission?

I believe this deal an extraordinary PR coup for desperate-to-be-greenwashed Sun Edison First Wind --  one so incredible it defies the imagination. The message it sends to the EDP's of the world is unthinkably grim.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
