George Smith's Hypocrisy is Showing

George Smith, outdoor writer and former Director of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine (SAM), recently lost his father. My sincere condolences to the family.

On 10/31 he devoted his BDN column to remembering some of the great hunting trips he and his father shared. He closed with an insight that I think many of us share:

"We didn’t have firearms that day,

     and didn’t kill anything,

but that’s the smallest part of hunting..."

As I read that my…

STEEEE-RIKE TWO! For the Bowers Project!

This afternoon DEP Commissioner Patricia Aho signed the final denial document for First Wind's planned Bowers Mountain Wind Project in Carroll Plt and Kossuth Twp.

I have not read the entire decision document but at a glance it appears very similar to the draft that was circulated last week.  Of course First Wind has the right to appeal to BEP and…

PPDLW: Bowers Project DENIED!!

This afternoon DEP released the draft of its decision on First Wind's Bowers Mountain Wind Project. The Department concluded that "The proposed activity would significantly compromise views from a SRSNS and would have an unreasonable adverse effect on the scenic character and existing uses related to scenic character of the resource."

The decision specifically states that even if the radar-activated lighting were to be retrofitted to the project, it would still have an unreasonable…

Tell the Feds to stop funding industrial wind!!

Eric Cantor, Majority Leader-elect, has created a site which solicits ideas from WE THE PEOPLE for where Federal spending cuts should be made. It's an interesting concept and another arrow in our quiver.

Regardless of your political affiliation, please go to the following link and suggest that we stop providing the industrial wind developers with Federal Grants and Federal Loan Guarantees. I also think they ought to reduce the subsidies and tax… Continue

Need advice: First Wind trying to redefine expedited zone again.

HELP! They're at it again. First Wind (Champlain Wind LLC) is about to apply for the permit to put 25 turbines on Bowers Mtn and Dill Hill Ridge. That's about 20 miles east of Lincoln and just south of their Stetson industrial wind facilities (DeLorme map 45, 1E). Although some of the project will be in Carroll Plt, which is in the Expedited Zone, the other part is in southern Kossuth Plt which is NOT in the Expedited Zone. All of… Continue

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
