California Power Companies Propose Fixed-Rate Bill Based on Income, Not Usage

KTLA reported:

Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric, and San Diego Gas & Electric submitted a joint proposal to the state’s Public Utilities Commission last week that outlines the new rate structure. It follows last year’s passage of Assembly Bill 205 which requires a fixed rate and…

The Power to Control the Electric Market Always Goes to The Biggest Users

Massachusetts has an aggressive policy to de-carbonate electricity generation, as do all the New England States.

Before analyzing the impacts of new policies adopted by Massachusetts, consider this fact : "REC markets provide the opportunity to claim renewability without having to make a long-term commitment of purchasing or generating physical…

Canadian wildfires impacting solar production, electricity demand in New England

In recent days, smoke from wildfires in Canada has traveled to New England, significantly lowering production from solar resources in the region compared to what ISO New England would expect absent the smoke.

Surging New England Energy Prices: No Surprise

By Steve Goreham -- May 30, 2023

“New England home heating and electricity prices are on the rise with no end in sight. Consumers paid record high energy bills last winter, even though the winter was not unusually cold. Shortages of natural gas and green energy policies will drive New England prices higher and raise the chance of electricity blackouts.”

Residential energy bills in New England this year were the…

The Chase for Carbon Zero is Futile With Wind and Solar, With or Without Storage

The following is a guest article by Bryan Leyland.

Many governments in the Western world have committed to “net zero” emissions of carbon in the near future. The US and UK both say they will deliver by 2050. It’s widely believed that wind and solar power can achieve this. This belief has led the US and British governments, among others, to promote and heavily subsidize wind and…

At the Heart of a Proposed CMP and Versant Takeover

I'm not defending CMP by any means, but if you think there are smarter people in our state that understand how to run a power system both reliably and economically, you will be sadly mistaken. They will use a consumer owned utility to advance their green energy goals and do it with no planning, in the way they are doing it now. People really dislike CMP, and some of that is…

Rising costs of solar subsidies in Maine prompts debate over program’s future

https://www.mainepublic.org/people/kevin-miller

Maine's public advocate is warning that electric ratepayers are about to be hit with another price increase unless lawmakers change a law that encourages solar energy development.

"This program just keeps giving and giving,” said William Harwood of Maine’s Office of the Public Advocate. “There are more…

A rate hike that should have never happened.

Natural gas prices dictate the wholesale price of electricity in New England. The price of wind and solar projects dictate the retail price of electricity in Maine(Over 2000 megawatts)

A 10 Percent ‘Community Solar’ Discount? Think Again!

By Joseph Toomey -- May 9, 2023

“A 10% reduction off the retail rate for wholesale power would net Summit Ridge Energy a price of $0.1181 per kWh, which is 244% higher than the average wholesale rate in 2021 that all other power producers received. And that boost will be absorbed and passed on to all retail ratepayers.”

“The $2.5 billion investment in production plants that Q-Cells promises isn’t really coming from the company,…

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/

Hannah Pingree - Director of Maine's Office of Innovation and the Future

"Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion.
