Reminder of the Economics of Wind Subsidies

While I am appalled by the destruction of Maine's natural and scenic resources by the proliferation of the industrial wind scourge, I have always tried to make economic arguments.  The article linked here does a good reminder of the reliance of the wind industry on subsidies.

Excerpt:

"New data show just how bad a deal wind energy is for taxpayers — and the largesse extends far beyond the PTC. In 2013, wind received almost $6 billion…

Does nuclear power have a future in Maine?

Gary J. Duarte of Sparks, Nevada, is director of the U.S. Nuclear Energy Foundation, a national nuclear advocacy group based in Sparks.

Now living in Sparks, Nevada, I returned to Maine last year for my 50th Lewiston High School reunion and, while in the area, visited the Seabrook nuclear plant.

I grew up in Maine and lived in the state when Maine Yankee went online. Contrary to what people were led to believe, it was a successful power generating station.…

Damning Renewable Energy Measures Advance In Three Key Wind States

As state legislative sessions kick into high gear, three damning pieces of legislation - including two particularly crippling bills for wind energy - advanced in Texas, Nebraska and North Carolina.

Texas - the No. 1 wind state in the U.S. - is facing legislation that, among other things, will repeal its renewable portfolio standard (RPS) and dismantle the Competitive Renewable Energy Zones…

As Maine regulators mull pipeline expansion proposals, CMP picks its favorite

The omnibus energy bill passed in 2013 authorized the Maine Public Utilities Commission to have the state’s investor-owned electric utilities buy up to $75 million in natural gas capacity annually from a pipeline company, for up to 20 years.

The PUC is still evaluating proposals from the different companies, against power price forecasts it commissioned from various consulting groups......…

[-Both Videos-] of LD 1329 May 5th, 2015 [-Important Wind Power Hearing-]

Recorded per request, this is the video of LD 1329 that was recorded at the EUT. This bill was introduced before closure of the last legislative session, yet was delayed this session until nearly the last minute for committee discussion. This bill will now apparently be split into two parts for consideration. The ENR will be…

LD-1329 is a solution to the problem, or the state's motto will become:

"MAINE, A GREAT STATE TO LEAVE"

If the wind rush in Maine is not stopped and its  resultant build out  for peak power transmission lines not halted by  Mainers and the PUC, the state's new motto will indeed become the above.

It will become cost-prohibitive for business to live there, and for many residents  to pay their electric bills.

Building more buried  non-visible  natural  gas lines  in…

Bill Would Reverse Maine's Course on Wind Power Development

"Maine already has the highest renewable portfolio in the nation and only two states' electricity sectors have lower CO2 emissions than Maine," O'Connor said. "We are doing great at being clean - now it's time to be smart."

And, she said, there's more. "This repeals the zone changes that made wind energy a permitted use," O'Connor said. "Thousands of residents choose to live in parts of Maine where, in 2008, a zoning decision that was made in Augusta - they lost their ability to…

New England Governors - Malloy: $7.5 Billion vanishes into thin air

Elin Katz, a Connecticut consumer official, said winter 2015 electricity prices averaged 17.34 cents a kilowatt hour across New England compared to a 12.81-cent average across the three states of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Malloy said the price spikes collectively added about $7.5 billion to the region’s electricity tab over the last two winters and LePage said the high costs put the region at a competitive disadvantage.…

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
