I recently received solicitation from Smart Energy Inc. for a six month trial using so-called renewable energy for my electricity supply. In exchange for my gullibility, ignorance and naivete, I would receive a $200 dollar visa gift card. Still being able to do sixth grade math from the great education I received at B. E Moore school  in Ellsworth some 64 years ago I dug. out sixth months of CMP bills.

                                     Usage-CMP supply only 3373 KWH X.1181 =$398.35

                             Smart Energy supply offer      3373 KWH X.249  = $839.98

                                                                                        ----------------------

                                                                              Difference            $441.53

Smart Energy Visa gift card bribe            $(200.00)

                                                                                                      ------------

My additional cost to use energy supplied by wind and solar      $241.53

In exchange for the destruction of Maine's mountaintops, ridges and vistas for industrial  wind and the waste of precious farmland for solar farms, we get to reward the same investors who developed Record Hill Wind (former Governor Angus King) Kibby Mountain Wind (Trans Canada Corp et al),and Bingham wind (Onward Energy). Moving on to solar farms, we have 490 acres of farmland destroyed in Farmington, (Nextera)  with 300,000 panels, then renewable blueberry land in Hancock destroyed  and owned by BNRG of Dublin, Ireland.

There is nothing renewable about wind turbines and solar panels. They are not recyclable and will require new landfills after they have filled the pockets of their investors while the same time fleecing the public with subsidies, accelartated deprecation and investment tax credits.

Lastly , we had a minority of voters turn out last November to halt CMP's NECEC hydroelectric corridor from Hydro-Quebec which would have supplied electricity at between five and seven cents per Kilowatt  hour (KWH)

This Smart Energy scam along with the continuing fiasco in our University of Maine System should make Maine voters finally  wake up and say enough of this!!

Folks, My post above really doesn't have. anything to do with smart meters. The whole point of my exercise is to point out the folly of solar/wind energy supply.  I just wonder why any sane person could be bought off by this sca and why no member has taken issue with me should they disagree.

Let's try to understand how the electricity from NECEC would have affected the New England grid and how it would have affected the electricity used in Maine.

First of all, Maine is a part of the New England wholesale electricity market administrated by ISO-NE. The other states that participate in the ISO-NE market are New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

We know the 1200 megawatts that NECEC produces would be bought by Massachusetts by power purchase agreement at a price that would benefit the purchaser whenever the wholesale price exceeded the power purchase price, which currently would be a very frequent occurrence as natural gas, the dominant electric producer in New England sets the wholesale price and it is very high.

NECEC generation would not set the price as it is willing to be offered into the market by the Massachusetts' utilities (the purchaser) at a much lower bid than NG plants, which means it will always be a constant supplier (Like nuclear in New England) and would receive the clearinghouse price set by the dominant producer (NG).

NECEC power would replace 1200 megawatts of natural gas-fired generation. A quick look at the market reveals when 1200 megawatts of natural gas fired electricity is removed from competition, prices fall towards the offering price of lower bid producers.

1200 megawatts of lower priced generation lower all prices given to supply, which, in turn, lowers the retail prices paid by consumers.

Now, Maine consumes 8% of the power flowing through the New England Grid, so, at the very least, Maine's overall payments for wholesale electricity would lower by a factor representing this share of consumption.

But electricity is trafficked through the grid starting at the entry point of the generation. Because congestion caused by too much generation entering the grid too close together within shared transmission lines, the lower priced generation is called on first and this called on electricity is consumed at the most economical formula which is by the closest consumers to prevent line losses when moving electricity long distances.

This benefits Maine because NECEC enters the grid in Lewiston which is close to the mega centers of southern Maine.

Massachusetts may be paying for NECEC electricity and the transmission line to get it to Lewiston, but the physical benefit of having the power available goes to Maine. The bragging rights for the acquisition of greenhouse reducing generation goes to Massachusetts by the purchase agreement exclusively granted to Massachusetts Utilities.

To be clear, there is no extension or dedicated line from Canada to Massachusetts. It was simply not set up that way. People who tell this tale of "extension cord" are ill-informed or just too lazy to look up the truth (which one can find on the ISO-NE website as it is full of information about market operations)

For all those who hate fossil fuel, NECEC would replace fossil fuel generation of Maine natural gas-fired plants without any loss in reliability. As a matter of fact, it is the tight supply of natural gas and pipeline constraints that force the price of electricity to reach astronomical highs and makes natural gas-fired output susceptible to rolling blackouts.

I hope the courts can see the irrationality of allowing 18% of Maine's eligible voters deciding the fate of this most valuable project and let it be built.

When the supply can't be depended upon as it can with a source like natural gas, an alternate way to match up supply and demand is to control the demand. Enter the smart meter.

"A smart grid would allow the integration of variable energy sources like wind and solar. For example, if electricity output dropped suddenly due to a change in wind generation, the grid could dim the lights in big box stores by 20%, a change most people don't perceive, say Don Von Dollen, program manager for the IntelliGrid project at the Electric Power Research Institute".

CMP installed smart meters as far back as 2017.  During the blackout of that year, resulting from their incompetence, their own programmed graphs indicated fluctuating usage all the while power was out.  They also installed the meters without consulting customers, which went against the prevailing "regulations".  I had the smart meter removed.  Recently I got a flyer indicating they're trying another meter, supposedly one not rife with health dangers.  Ive been unsuccessful in finding out about the new meters, from Cmp or on line.  I pay a fee for someone to check my meter every other month.  It keeps going up and up, the fee.

Thank you for this Dudley ,

I am still wondering why the voters of Roxbury voted in  favor of Angus King during his run for US senate in 2012 after he scammed them in the most despicable fashion in order to get his way and destroy a most beautiful ridge along Ellis Pond.

Scams exist because critical thinking does not exist ..only smooth operators win.

The NECEC would've passed through Maine, it was not meant to and would not have supplied power to Mainers,

Good post. Thanks!

Customers should be aware that the Smart meters being in stalled on their homes and apartments (unless you opt out) are part of the Internet of Things and will allow the utilities to eventually ration the amount of energy you get, based upon what the Smart meter reports and what the supply is. Versant is installing them right now. Their literature never mentions they are Smart technology.

“....80 percent of U.S. homes already have the mechanism in place for the technocrats to intervene in your energy consumption. They’re called smart meters — little chips that interact with the power grid, monitoring not only how much power we’re using in real time but where e“xactly that power is drawing from. Every appliance made over the last 20 years or so contains a chip that is talking to the smart meter and telling the power company everything it needs to know about where your electric power usage is coming from”

House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
