Carbon fee and dividend will help slow climate change

In a recent column on carbon taxes published in this newspaper, the author correctly describes French President Emmanuel Macron’s nightmare with violent opposition to his tax on gasoline (“Commentary: A setback for carbon taxes,” Dec. 15). But unfortunately, it did not describe the innovative bill introduced in Congress — the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, sponsored by the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus in the House.

It would raise prices of all fossil fuels while at the same time returning all revenue equally to every resident. A similar plan has been introduced by the Canadian government.

This month’s fuel-tax riots in Paris and the defeat of a carbon-fee ballot measure in Washington state show the difficulty of getting people to support a levy on the energy sources that heat their homes and power their cars. Meanwhile, even the most liberal Democratic candidates this year gave carbon taxes scant if any mention in their climate platforms, focusing instead on proposals like a phaseout of fossil fuels and massive investments in wind and solar power.

Tucker Highlights 'Terrifying' Prediction That America Is Heading for 'Oligarchical Socialism'

Tucker Carlson highlighted Wednesday a "terrifying" piece that warns America is headed for "oligarchical socialism," where the large majority of wealth will be concentrated among a small number of tech billionaires. 

The author of the Orange County Register column, Joel Kotkin, said Wednesday that tech giants, like Facebook and Amazon, prefer non-unionized, part-time workers and an increasing number from overseas. But he said they do not want to pay for benefits and pensions for full-time employees like traditionally "evil" oil companies and manufacturers. 

Kotkin, Presidential Fellow in Urban Futures at Chapman University and executive director of the Houston-based Center for Opportunity Urbanism, said the system of taking wealth from the upper middle-class through taxation is already occurring in California, leading to a shrinking middle class that can no longer afford to buy homes

"That's what they want to do nationally. They're not gonna attack the oligarchs, they're gonna attack the upper middle-class. That's where the money is," he said, explaining that higher taxes would be used to subsidize a guaranteed income, health care costs and rent.

Kotkin said the leaders of tech and finance companies are increasingly supporting Democrats, appealing to liberals on issues like climate change, race, gender and immigration.

Schweizer added, “Well, those are all nice theories, but they’re all wrong and incorrect, because what has been revealed is that yes, Google and Facebook and these companies do want to make money, but deeply embedded in their corporate culture and their corporate structure is this left-wing view, and the left-wing view is essentially one in which they feel they need to have a transformative effect on their customers and on American society. They’ve been quite open about this. Eric Schmidt of Google and others have said that they view part of their purpose as to transform American values in the direction that they want to go.”
