ISO-NE made a big deal when they instituted a rule that has wind and solar projects bidding into the day ahead market. This is all fine as long as they perform according to their load offer(s). Because they can also offer bids in the five minute market( real time market), one would think they would be conservative with their day ahead bids so as not to be caught unable to supply their bid offer.

Climate activists will tell you that wind and solar put downward pressure on day ahead energy prices by replacing supply of more expensive sources (likely natural gas). Actually, natural gas sourced electricity is intrinsically linked to natural gas prices, so there is little difference in one plant's price to another's price, and because there is always a need to maintain enough natural gas supplied plant capacity to cover intermittent resources, the injection of wind and solar energy is insignificant in lowering prices in the day ahead market. This is true no matter how much wind and solar is brought to market.
The other thing that prevents wind and solar from setting day ahead prices is that most of them receive out of market power purchase agreements(PPA) that guarantee their profit margins so long as they price themselves low enough( sometimes 0) in the day ahead market to be part of the supply to satisfy the load. This generally means ratepayers have to pay the difference between the PPA price and the market price.
To make matters even more favorable to wind and solar, laws in place charge natural gas plants a carbon tax which raises their production costs which are passed on to ratepayers. Wind and solar will not lower these costs. This carbon tax increases over time as it is indexed to a market that decreases allowable tons of emitted carbon over time.

The notion that wind and solar can completely replace natural gas is a fallacy. They know it, but want you to be convinced that they can and, in fact, gaslight you into thinking they will lower your monthly electric bills in the long run. Absolutely, a lie driven by the greed for money.

The "Green Scam" a phrase used by many who know how the market, the public, the lawmakers, the media, the intellectuals and the regulators are being manipulated using an unjust cause of C02 alchemy.

America’s Love for Natural Gas Caps Emissions

- For the first time on record, US emissions from gas-fired power stations surpassed the mark of 1 billion metric tonnes of CO2, however thanks to natural gas pushing out coal the country’s total emissions barely edged higher.

- US coal plants discharge on average 77% more CO2 per unit of electricity than gas-fired plants, triggering a slump in coal-fired emissions that dipped to an all-time low of 620 million tonnes in 2024.

- Thirteen US states rely on natural gas for more than 50% of their electricity, spearheaded by Delaware and Rhode Island with an 88% and 86% share, respectively, with Vermont being the only state that has no gas-fired power at all.

- Across the United States, there are almost 50 gas-fired power either in pre-construction or under construction with an incremental generation capacity of 30 GW, indicating that America’s reliance on gas will only deepen down the road

Dan,

You are forgetting the six costs and env damage and area requirements

There is no way day ahead, or whatever, is a fair market on an A-to-Z basis. ISONE is well aware of this, but has no balls to insist on fairness

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
