Rhode Island eyeing electricity generated by Bowers Mountain wind farm

Posted Oct. 10, 2013, at 10:49 a.m.

CAROLL PLANTATION, Maine — The Providence Journal on Thursday reported that National Grid, an East Coast utility, has signed a proposal to purchase electricity from the Bowers Mountain wind farm to power Rhode Island.

According to the report, National Grid would pay 7.8 cents per kilowatt hour from the farm, proposed by Boston-based First Wind, that would be built in eastern Penobscot County in Maine.

The proposal is subject to approval from the three-member Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission.

So true Brad. Since we are exporting power, (not from wind farms), it would be easy for us. Reasons why this latest  idea from our state govts. will not happen.

1) First ME has to erect transmission lines for the wonderful new alternative power. We are already paying for it. The other states in New England  in between  also have to build  new transmission lines.

2) The transmission lines in themselves are ugly and huge. Children living close to them have higher incidences of leukemia. If tourism is affected by wind farms, the transmission lines will be the final nail in the coffin .

3) The fact that there is no way to transport or store the power has not deterred our elected officials when you wave a dollar in front of them. Not to mention power is lost for every mile of transmission. That is why your ideas mades so much sense. It is truly environmentally friendly.... America is waking up to this way of governing, it won't last forever.

Oh..Burlington was the last township to of approve of the Rollins Project. I think their selectmen actually tried to do their jobs. So it is  looking like they actually got something. After 20 years they will own 3 turbines. Maybe they have good hearts but don't research, don't know. That isn't all they got..will find out details and post.

Meanwhile Lincoln was an easy sale. Just ask the people who tried to convince the Lincoln selectmen it was a bad idea. What did they get? Who knows but they have had a 1.2 million dollar mistake in their budget..their taxes are going up..there is constant changing of the guard with those who have something to do with Lincoln's revenues. Maybe the Lincoln elected officers  could take a lesson from the tiny town of Burlington.

I would love to see a law passed that while maintaining the connectivity, reliability, and stability of a regional grid, each state would have to generate enough electricity within its own borders to equal the consumption of electricity in its state. Let northern New England states be as self sufficient as they are and force electricity generation to be where the population and heavy consuming commerce is located. That would stop the proliferation of utility scale wind projects in Maine immediately and we could proceed to dismantle the ones that exist, as they are not needed and cannot compete with our other sources of electricity.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
