Rumford Ordinance Proposes 40 Decibel Limit

Why isn’t the mathematical modeling of sound derived for wind turbines working for the Maine DEP ? Has something been left out of the equations used by the computers to generate the colorful graphs showing us how sound travels ? Anyone familiar with computers sooner or later realizes the output is only as good as the input. Make a mistake with your input, your output will never be right., which can be as simple as a mistype.
Recently, in Rumford, at a wind ordinance workshop, we heard Mr. Fisk of the Maine DEP state his comfort with the current standard of 45 decibels as the limit for night time sounds from wind turbines. Why aren’t the people of Mars Hill, Vinalhaven and Freedom enjoying this comfort as they try to sleep through the sounds from wind turbines ? Are they not understanding what the computers and Mr. Fisk are explaining to us.
Of course , the computer sound modeling has no way to input the real experiences of the people living close to wind turbines. Equations depicting distress don’t exist.
Back to the original question of mathematical modeling. The computer is a digital instrument. Everything appearing on your screen is a resulting manipulation of numbers. This is complicated, but consider that science is man’ quest to understand physical nature through mathematical device ( by the numbers , so to speak ). Imagination is the starting point to this process. The scientist must come up with all the effects that create an effect. Confusing ? Well, let‘s try a simple example in scientific approach. You want to install a door to a room. Sizing the door means imagining what you will eventually want to place in the room through this opening. If, someday you find a couch you want to put in this room does not fit through the door opening, I guess, your imagination fell short. Now, try to use your imagination to describe the sophisticated realm of sound. . An unimaginable task .
So, what would you do about the 45 decibel limit ? Considering the stress this limit has upon fellow humans and the fact this only shows someone’s imagination has fallen short in describing sound, despite what the computers say , would you try a quieter limit ( say 40 decibels ) which is apt to bring about satisfying results ?
I can’t live without computers, but I am not ready for the computer to replace good, old common sense.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
