NE Grid and Limited Canadian Imports on very cold day

Saturday, January 22, 2022 was a very cold day in the Northeast.  Montreal was -15 F.   The Net Imports to New England drop to 354 MW at 5:50 AM -- unusually low.   'HQ_P1_P2' is power from Quebec and 'SALBRYNB' is power from New Brunswick.

Quebec was importing power from Ontario.

The power from Wind at 8 am was minor - 146 MW ... less than 1% of load.

This page NE Grid Status on Saturday, January 22, 2022 provides further details.

In 2021 15.8% of New England's net power was imported from Quebec, New Brunswick, and New York state.

Impressive graphs at that page link.  Thank you!

PART 1

VELCO FIRST TIME AROUND GRID UPGRADE BOONDOGGLE FOR A MERE $1.2 BILLION

VELCO is repackaging a previous grid upgrade scheme called FORTRESS VERMONT

The price tag was $1.2 billion FOR THE 2020 = 2025 PERIOD

- About $900 million would be for new electricity storage systems, during the 2020 – 2025 period, and several $billions thereafter, to implement “100%-RE-in-Vermont”. The battery capacity would be about $900 million/($750/kWh) = 1200 MWh, i.e., 300 MW delivered for 4 hours. See Notes.

- About $300 million would be to pay wind/solar system owners whose electricity outputs would be curtailed during high winds and very sunny days, during the 2020 – 2025 period.

PART 2

VELCO SECOND TIME AROUND GRID UPGRADE BOONDOGGLE FOR A MERE $2.2 BILLION

VELCO is jumping up and down in front of "charade Committee hearings” to get its OK to donate VELCO an extra $2.2 billion to upgrade VELCO’s High Voltage grid, including very expensive battery systems, that cost at least 30c / kWh to operate, if financing, owners return on investment, and the degrading effects of aging are included in the economic evaluation, on a lifetime, A-to-Z basis. See URLs

Battery system life is 15 years or less.

$2.2 billion for Vermont's HV grid, which takes just 5% of the NE grid load

That HV grid “upgrading” would cost about 100%/5% x $2.2 billion = $44 billion for ALL OF NEW ENGLAND.

That upgrading  primarily benefits Vermont’s electric utilities, which will get a whole lot of goodies for free, so they can artificially keep down electric rates, which would help them promote heat pumps and electric vehicles, and make oodles of more money, by selling more electricity to sucked-dry, over-taxed, over-regulated ratepayers

I have three heat pumps in my house.

Turnkey capital cost was $24,000

I do not use them at temps less than 15F, because the electricity cost per hour would be more, than my efficient propane furnace.

COLD CLIMATE HEAT PUMP?  MY FOOT!!!

THAT IS JUST A PR GIMMICK

I tested my kitchen heat pump when it was -20F in January 2022

After about 20 minutes, all I got was luke warm air that was not sufficient to heat my kitchen!!

Excellent work Warren.  Please keep us abreast of developments to deal with these serious issues.  Obviously the grid is not ready for New England state's plans to rely heavily on renewable energy.

If you hover over 5:50 am on the 'NE Grid Status' graph you should see it:

Warren,

How did you obtain 354 MW?

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
