How Important is the Northern Maine Renewable Energy Project to New England Electric Customers?
Maine is a participant in the ISO-NE network. As such, the state and the lawmakers of the state of Maine must realize that ISO-NE makes no decisions in the selection of generation types that are used for New England's electricity supply, although the States do, at the peril to all New England electricity consumers.
ISO-NE tracks the renewable resources the states select and found the following impacts:
"Renewable Generation Curtailment: Curtailment levels remained very small in
magnitude—accounting for less than 0.1% of total energy supply. Most curtailed energy was
driven by localized transmission constraints, with a smaller share occurring during periods of
low or negative system prices or due to economic offer behavior in export-constrained areas"
If ISO-NE could make decisions about renewable generation selections, surely they would not condone spending 2 billion + dollars to overbuild transmission in Maine and New Hampshire to bring a trace amount of renewable energy from Aroostook County into the network to reduce so little existing curtailment. The electric customers of New England would be better served if ISO-NE does reject the The Nothern Maine Renewable Energy Project Transmission overbuild as an overly expensive, non-effective addition to the wholesale market. The relief to curtailment levels is not worth it.
The State of Maine is not using common sense. ISO-NE is prompted by Maine lawmakers not to use common sense. The New England electric customers are being screwed, over and over again.
