Fundraiser to Fight Oakfield Wind July 14
As a Massachusetts resident but lifelong summer Mainer, it has been a blessing to spend the last two weeks at my families cottages on Pleasant Lake in Island Falls. Even as I type this I look out onto pristine views that as we all know are threatened to become extinct should First Winds plans come to fruition in Oakfield. Lynne Williams, Donna Davidge and so many others have been fighting long and hard and financial support is crucial to keep the good fight going. Myself and Ben Walker, who runs VA-JO-WA Golf Course and whose house on Pleasant will be facing at least a dozen of these monstrosities have decided to hold a fundraiser on July 14. Unfortunately the same date as the Lincoln Lakes visit. There will be an 18 hole scramble beginning at 10AM cost is $30 per person. We are having a BBQ starting at 5 PM with live entertainment and beverages. $10 per adult $5 per child. Some generous folks have offered to donate money for food and prizes for the tournament / raffle and we welcome others who are willing and able to do the same. All proceeds from the day will go to the legal fund and hopefully we raise more awareness locally about the impact of the wind turbines. Apologies to the folks organizing the Lincoln trip, but it was the only date that worked for the golf course.

Brian - the fundraiser sure sounds like a lot of FUN! And for such a great cause!
I wish I could be there but right now I do not plan to drive up to Maine from North Carolina until early August. I hope I get a chance to meet as many of the folks who live around the lakes and tell them my point of view regarding these 500 foot tall, inefficient, tourism killing monsters.
I think many of them don't realize how much they will lose if these monsters are built.
I will be giving them my point of view as a "tourist" - and that they will lose a ton of tourism dollars if these things are built.
Best of luck with the fundraiser! I hope I get a chance to meet you and some of the other wind supporters when I visit Island Falls in August!

Bible Point State Historic Site
The 27-acre Bible Point site was made famous by Teddy Roosevelt who visited the area beginning in 1878. Roosevelt camped at the southern end of Mattawamkeag Lake and hunted and fished throughout the area. It was reported that, each day, the future U.S. President would take his bible and hike to a beautiful point of land at the confluence of the West Branch of the Mattawamkeag River and First Brook where he would read the bible. A plaque at the site commemorates Roosevelt's love for the area with the following inscription:"This place to which a great man in his youth liked to come to commune with God and with the wonder and beauty of the visible world is dedicated to the happy memory of Theodore Roosevelt."
Seeking a quiet, relaxing spot away from hustle and bustle? Several such spots exist in southern Aroostook, many with historical significance.
President Theodore Roosevelt has a deep connection to Bible Point, located at the confluence of the west branch of the Mattawamkeag River and First Brook. According to a published history of Island Falls, Roosevelt spent part of each day alone in the woods with a Bible, sitting alone and reflecting. A marker is erected near the spot in Island Falls, and the area has been placed in the state Register of Historic Places.
The inscription was erected in 1921 by Roosevelt biographer Hermann Hagedorn. It reads:
"This place, to which a great man in
his youth liked to come to commune
with God and with the wonder and
beauty of the visible world, is
dedicated to the happy memory of
THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Stranger, rest here and consider
what one man, having faith in the
right and love for his fellow man
was able to do for his country."
