Legislative Forum
Saturday, January 12

Waterville, Maine
Exit 127 (Oakland/Waterville) of I-95
Friends of Maine's Mountains have secured the use of the meeting room at the Weathervane, with doors opening at 11 am.  The Legislative Forum meeting facilitated by FMM starts at 12:30 pm and will go until 3 pm.  It is a great opportunity to find out about two major bills and others that are planned for the upcoming Legislature and to discuss organizational needs to ensure success for our agenda, which is to make substantial changes to the "wind law", strengthen protection from visual impacts, make changes in noise regulations, and protection of the unorganized territories.  In addition, there will be discussion of the Governor's energy legislation and the change in the leadership of the Governor's Energy Office.

Folks, we face a challenging year and it is always difficult to get people together for a statewide meeting, so I am calling a brief CTFWP Caucus so we can discuss some of our state-wide coalition issues.  As you likely are aware, the wind industry, after being repeatedly defeated all year in every attempt to renew the PTC, got the gift of a one year extension in the "fiscal cliff" deal.  That means a full speed onslaught to take advantage of Maine's expedited wind permitting process and get as many projects started as possible.  To complicate matters, the change in the Legislature makes it more challenging to our legislative agenda unless we can convince more Legislators that we are correct about our issues.
Here is my appeal to YOU:  We need people to step into more active support for our efforts.  There are so many tasks at hand, so much we can accomplish if people will say they are willing to put a few more hours and maybe some special effort into building a more effective CTFWP.  START by Attending this January 12th Meeting!  I will be there at 11 am.  If you haven't met me, introduce yourself and let's chat.  I know the core activists---I want to know YOU and speak to you about what we can do together.

This past week, I sent a letter to Governor LePage regarding the change in leadership of the Energy Office from Kenneth Fletcher to Patrick Woodcock.  I also was a guest on a business-oriented talk show on WLOB-AM talking about the economics of wind power and how it affects the state.  To listen to the segment, click on this link:  http://boxtalkradio.com/  When the page comes up, click on "Download the Show Audio Here".  The download is an mp3 and may take a few minutes depending on the speed of your computer.  If you wish to fast forward to my segment, move the play indicator to a little more than halfway across the bar.
Finally, if you are unable to attend the Waterville meeting on January 12th but want to know more about the "ACTION GROUP" we will be forming, respond to this email or send me a separate email at bblake02@maine.rr.com.   We CAN DEFEAT the wind industry in Maine, but only if we take action and not sit back and wish it were so.  Our success will depend on YOU!

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

******** IF LINKS BELOW DON'T WORK, GOOGLE THEM*********

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/

Sign up today and lend your voice and presence to the steadily rising tide that will soon sweep the scourge of useless and wretched turbines from our beloved Maine countryside. For many of us, our little pieces of paradise have been hard won. Did the carpetbaggers think they could simply steal them from us?

We have the facts on our side. We have the truth on our side. All we need now is YOU.
