First Wind Says Brighton Needs to Change It's Land Use Laws

Last night i got to see the Bernstein Shur/Verill Dana shills try and sell Brighton on buying into their plans for 40-50 turbines along the ridge from Bingham, through Brighton, Mayfield, and Kingsbury.
The company apparently doesn't feel comfortable with the land use laws in Brighton, which modeled its land use regulations on old LURC standards when Brighton left LURC and incorporated as a town in the 90's i think it was. Atty Juliet Brown encouraged the town to change its definition of "Utility Structures" to not include wind turbines, since currently utility structures aren't allowed where FW wants to build. She pointed out that LURC changed its definition to exempt turbines, and FW would feel more comfortable moving forward on the project if Brighton changed its laws to line up with LURC. I guess they don't get that it's scams like this that are a big part of WHY Brighton got out of LURC's jurisdiction in the first place. Not long after this request, the selectmen told the FW reps that they'd heard quite enough and encouraged them to head home.

Aw, Freemont! You're a sweetheart to say that. But many, many people are doing the same, thing-- YOU included! And I can't wait to see your video... what a great opportunity to educate Mainers. You just keep doing what you're doing. Little by little the folks of this state are standing up and saying 'No!' to Big Wind. We're going to win this battle. I can feel it in my bones!

Hugs. Kaz

P.S. Save me one of those squeezes, okay? :o)

Hey Hillary! It was great to meet you on Monday night. And thanks for recording the session. Juliet Brown most definitely wanted Brighton to amend its ordinance to suit First Wind and their desires... that was rather cheeky, I thought.

If you'll remember... I asked Ms. Brown a question regarding that issue. I asked her if Brighton does NOT change their ordinance to match LURC's recent determination that 'utilities' did not mean 'wind developments', would First Wind legally challenge Brighton on that issue? And she responded "No. If Brighton doesn't want to have this project, then that's that" (Or something very similar.... the recording will give the exact wording.)

What that says--imo--is that Brighton has an amazing opportunity. Joan Fortin of Bernstein Shur/First Wind told the Somerset County Commissioners that each piece of the development puzzle was considered when determining the project's viability. If Brighton refuses them access to its hills... that removes 8-10 tubines from the development and reduces its potential for a 'return'. If Somerset County denies a TIF for the Mayfield section, which I believe they will do... that makes the development less appealing. If the town of Bingham does the same... another mark gets put in the 'negative' column. Brighton has the power to be the first link in a chain of events which might just stop the whole project.

The people of Brighton who spoke out on Monday night should be proud of themselves, and of their town. They/you are proving that you have a voice, and it still has power. I look forward to seeing the will of People winning the day. It's about time, imo... and it's just the beginning!

Thanks again!
Kaz

P.S. I'd love to talk to you some more... my email is in your little note pad, as is my phone number. :o)

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
