"Experiment Gets An F-Minus": Nantucket Residents Fume Over Broken Wind Turbine Blade Polluting Beaches

"The great Nantucket experiment gets an F-minus," Kevin O'Leary, chairman of O'Leary Ventures, told Bloomberg, referring to the offshore turbine failure that resulted in broken fiberglass littering the pristine beaches of Nantucket last month. The turbine is part of the offshore Vineyard Wind project.

O'Leary continued, "It's not a golden example of success in wind turbines, that's for sure."

The federal government ordered Vineyard Wind's project south of Nantucket last month to halt construction and electricity generation following the blade malfunction

The company managing the project determined the turbine blade failure was due to a "manufacturing deviation," adding that before energy can be produced, all blades across the project will be inspected with ultrasound technology and drones, reported local media CapeCod

.

Vineyard Wind CEO Klaus Møller stated, "We believe we have the right plan in place to recover the rest of the blade, secure any debris offshore and onshore, and safely and responsibly resume the installation program so we can put this project back on track to deliver needed clean power to the New England region."

Nantucket is merely a casualty of the Biden-Harris administration's push to 'greenify' the US economy with unreliable wind and solar. The admin has pledged to develop 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030.

Now community leaders on the small island, home to some of Biden's wealthy Democrat donors, plan to renegotiate the island's "good neighbor" agreement with Vineyard Wind, according to Bloomberg.

Gabriel Frasca, chef and part owner of Straight Wharf Restaurant on the island, said the offshore wind power project sounds like a great idea in a vacuum, but this "well-intentioned idea" has "calamitous, unintended consequences."

The Biden-Harris administration pitched the American people that green energy was desperately needed to defeat 'climate change' and that these green projects would yield beneficial returns. We're all glad Harris wasn't the 'Green Czar'... However, Democrats didn't explain any consequences of broken blades and entirely left out that this type of power generation is unreliable if the wind doesn't blow. Also, for solar, if the sun doesn't shine, where does the power come from?

For Nantucket residents, the consequence of greenifying the power grid was at the expense of fiberglass shards.

Pat McEvoy, managing director at Canaccord Genuity and Nantucket resident, said the green energy push offshore "was jammed down our throats by the federal government." He added, "We were not represented in this process."

Even after the blade failure, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey told Bloomberg on Monday, "We need to do everything we can to transition away from fossil fuels and we've got a huge asset resource just sitting out there in the ocean."

Again, the view Democrats have in building out green projects is irrational because they are blinded by their 'climate alarmist' beliefs. Closing down coal and NatGas power generators for unreliable renewable energy is disastrous for power grids, especially when AI data centers, electric vehicles, and reshoring trends increase load demand.

Nantucket residents are furious.

Will some white liberal woke Volvo-driving Democrat women finally change their brainwashed minds on 'green' energy?

GE Vernova Sees Another Blade Failure at UK Offshore Wind Farm
Incident comes after high-profile Nantucket blade collapse
Offshore wind industry already battered by high interest rates.

.
A turbine blade failed at an offshore wind farm near England’s northeast coast, the latest in a string of similar accidents that has damaged public acceptance of the struggling industry.
.
The failure occurred Thursday morning on an installed GE Vernova Inc. turbine at the Dogger Bank wind farm, according to a notice on the project website that gave no further details of the damage. No one was injured in the incident, and the cause is under investigation. A GE Vernova representative confirmed Thursday’s incident in an emailed statement.
.
The same facility in May suffered a failed blade on a GE Vernova turbine, with the project developers saying the circumstances appeared to be isolated to that particular blade.
.
A month ago, a blade fell from a GE Vernova turbine off the US East Coast, with shards washing ashore on the island of Nantucket, closing beaches. Public outrage added to the problems already facing the industry, with rising interest rates and supply chain woes plaguing projects.

.
GE Vernova shares fell as much as 0.9% in after-hours trading Thursday.
Dogger Bank is expected to be the world’s largest offshore wind farm upon completion in 2026. The project is a joint venture of SSE Renewables, Equinor ASA and Vårgrønn.

.
Keep it coming, Frank
The more blades fail the better
These blades are so large, they oscillate in the wind.
.
Wind speeds at the bottom of the circle are much less than at the top
As a result, a blade sees constantly varying wind speeds, as it rotates
That variation is added to of the normal variations of wind speeds, before they enter the rotor
.
With short blades, that whole situation was only a minor problem
With long blades all hell brakes loose
.
If they were to use short blades, the production of each turbine would be greatly reduced.
.
Any floating wind turbines have all those problems and more, because of movement on the water, plus the movement on the water will end up greatly increasing wear and tear of the entire turbine
.
All the Hywind turbines in Scotland were towed to Norway for major overhaul after 6 years operation.
All is hush, hush!! No announcements
.
The Maine people are being so screwed by the idiot, leftist, woke, big government, Net Zero nuts, who literally do not know their ass from a h... in the ground, have no inkling what they are getting the Maine people into.
Starting in 2010, the DOE started a research program for the design of large wind turbine blades that would reach lengths of over 300 feet for the newly designed offshore wind turbines.
The Current GE blade that failed was approximately 353 feet long. The failure occurred approximately 60 feet from the hub. GE claims that this is possibly due to a material bonding problem. The problem, however, looks like a classical torsional failure of the blade due to the bending and twisting through each rotation.
The blade is highly stressed at the region of failure . A major problem appears to be the use of solely fiberglass without the use of reinforcing carbon fiber which also required the application of highly toxic epoxy glues.
The use of all fiberglass composites would never be allowed in aerospace structures . Fiberglass only has 1/10 the strength of carbon fiber.
If these turbines are put into operation, you can expect to see more of these failed turbine blades .

Maine Center For Public Interest Reporting – Three Part Series: A CRITICAL LOOK AT MAINE’S WIND ACT

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
