"Ethanol use threat to Public health"

On a personal level & and Environmental level

While James Lutz points out in his July 27 Bangor Daily News letter to the editor very important issues — damage to fuel systems, increased energy for production and “enormous subsidy” — about ethanol use, there is an even more important issue — the impact of ethanol use on our health.

When ethanol is combusted in an engine, it produces acetaldehyde in the exhaust. Acetaldehyde is a known human carcinogen and potent neurotoxin that attacks the nervous system. Acetaldehyde causes deficiencies in vitamins B1 (thiamine), B9 (folate) and B12. These deficiencies can cause high-blood pressure, emotional instability, confusion, fatigue, depression, irritability, headaches, sensitivity to noise, insomnia, decreased short-term memory, brain-fog, a feeling of impending doom, shortness of breath, sore or swollen tongue, anemia and reduced heart function.

Acetaldehyde is a foreign substance to the body, which causes an allergic reaction, the same as the different pollens. The difference being that we are exposed to acetaldehyde constantly, so that the allergic reaction is continuous.

When people drink ethanol (beer, wine, hard liquor), it begins to change into acetaldehyde. When people get a hangover, it is because the body cannot get rid of the acetaldehyde quickly enough. Drinking is a choice, but breathing is not, if people choose to live.

Not everybody is affected by acetaldehyde in the same way because of a person’s genetic makeup. If people do have the right genetic makeup, this can lead to a person to become addicted to drugs.

Maybe this is why Gov. Paul LePage has asked the Maine Center for Disease Control and other agencies to look at the ethanol issue.

"When the so-called environmentalists gave you a hard time for being opposed to the wonderful new world of wind energy just ask them what they'd give up to do without all the 'essentials' of modern life dependent on petrochemicals."

I would first ask them how much CO² it took in some other nation to produce the wind turbines, the new wires for the lines, the amount of plant life CO² sequestering materials displaced, amount of new equipment produced adding CO² to complete the transformation to wind or solar. Though the list goes on as to exactly what goes into a poor at best Idea, from the beginning planning to the recycling or inability to completely do so. Make a List.......... It would shock any environmentalists that can not admit the reality of it all.

Well as one of those persons who have severe reactions to all things petrochemical, I can attest that it's not a condition I'd wish on my worst enemy. My particular type of reaction is most often acidosis. It can be a mild brain fog to a total withdrawal into an inner earthquake requiring emergency care. It makes my life extremely difficult. If it were true that wind turbines were going to rid our environment of petrochemicals, I'd be the first one out there pushing for more of them. Trust me, even at the grim extent of the wind energy future forecast for Maine, it will not make a significant improvement in the levels of toxins we eat and breath every day. Some might say, yes but isn't it a start? I would say it's not a very well thought out start and not a very smart or efficient way to solve any of our problems with the chemicals in our air, water and soil. Some days I think it's not fair that I'm chemically sensitive but I don't think it is fair that other people have to suffer because I am. When the so-called environmentalists gave you a hard time for being opposed to the wonderful new world of wind energy just ask them what they'd give up to do without all the 'essentials' of modern life dependent on petrochemicals.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
