Department of Defense Could Derail Biden's 30,000 MW of Offshore Wind Fantasies by 2030

BY TYLER DURDEN

Bloomberg report reveals that the Defense Department is increasingly worried about President Biden's proposals to build massive wind systems across the mid-Atlantic region, as some of these areas are considered "highly problematic" for potential interference with military operations.

.

The DoD shared the map with energy industry stakeholders and lawmakers late last year. It outlines four large sections of water off the coasts of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware, earmarked for potential wind systems. Areas in red are labeled "highly problematic." Areas in yellow indicate that military officials need to conduct more research.

.

"The initial assessment performed by DoD found compatibility challenges with wind turbines near Navy and Air Force training,"

.

DoD spokesperson Kelly Flynn said in an emailed statement to Gizmodo. About 25% of the total planned offshore wind systems are impacted by the department's graphic.

"This assessment is the first step in the process and DoD will continue to refine the analysis and collaborate with the other stakeholders in order to promote compatible development in this location," Flynn added.

.

Huge Costs for Capital, Subsidies, and Grid expansion to Produce Expensive Electricity

DoD's opposition to the green project comes as the Biden administration wants to build 30,000 MW of offshore wind systems by 2030, at a turnkey cost of about $150 billion, of which more than 50% will be federal subsidies, which will be added to the already-bloated national debt.

.

Owners will be paid at least 10 to 11 c/kWh by utilities under 20-year contracts.

The utilities will roll that very expensive electricity into their mix of purchased electricity.

Owners would have to sell their electricity to utilities for at least 20 c/kWh, if no subsidies

NOTE: The 10 to 11 c/kWh compares with an NE wholesale price of about 5 c/kWh, which has been unchanged starting in 2009, courtesy of DOMESTIC, low-cost, low-CO2, no-particulate, NATURAL GAS, and DOMESTIC, low-cost, near-zero CO2, no particulate NUCLEAR

.
This does not include about $35 billion for grid expansion/augmentation of onshore grids, which will be charged to ratepayers, taxpayers and added to government debt

.

This does not include the significant expense of having a large capacity, MW, of oil/gas-fired CCGT power plants, fueled, staffed, kept in good working order, to:

1) counteract the up and down output of wind, on a minute-by-minute basis, 24/7/365, and to

2) make up the shortfall, in case the wind is hardly blowing, as happened in Europe during about 5 months in 2021.

That significant expense will be charged to ratepayers, taxpayers and added to government debt.

.

Surprisingly, it appears the Biden administration didn't consult with the military during the planning stage of these wind farms.

.

It could be the Pentagon was so busy being busy with war making, that it did not notice what the US Energy Department was cooking up.

(excerpts) From Part 1 – On Maine’s Wind Law “Once the committee passed the wind energy bill on to the full House and Senate, lawmakers there didn’t even debate it. They passed it unanimously and with no discussion. House Majority Leader Hannah Pingree, a Democrat from North Haven, says legislators probably didn’t know how many turbines would be constructed in Maine if the law’s goals were met." . – Maine Center for Public Interest Reporting, August 2010 https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-power-bandwagon-hits-bumps-in-the-road-3/From Part 2 – On Wind and Oil Yet using wind energy doesn’t lower dependence on imported foreign oil. That’s because the majority of imported oil in Maine is used for heating and transportation. And switching our dependence from foreign oil to Maine-produced electricity isn’t likely to happen very soon, says Bartlett. “Right now, people can’t switch to electric cars and heating – if they did, we’d be in trouble.” So was one of the fundamental premises of the task force false, or at least misleading?" https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/wind-swept-task-force-set-the-rules/From Part 3 – On Wind-Required New Transmission Lines Finally, the building of enormous, high-voltage transmission lines that the regional electricity system operator says are required to move substantial amounts of wind power to markets south of Maine was never even discussed by the task force – an omission that Mills said will come to haunt the state.“If you try to put 2,500 or 3,000 megawatts in northern or eastern Maine – oh, my god, try to build the transmission!” said Mills. “It’s not just the towers, it’s the lines – that’s when I begin to think that the goal is a little farfetched.” https://www.pinetreewatchdog.org/flaws-in-bill-like-skating-with-dull-skates/
