Richer people set up foundations to avoid state and federal inheritance taxes
If you are over 70, you have to take money out of your IRA
That money is taxable as ordinary income
If you have a foundation, you can take that money and add it to your foundation, and you do not have report it as taxable income.
Those foundations have to give away 5% each year to a qualifying charitable organization or school, etc.
If you put 50% of your assets in a foundation and 50% in a trust, you avoid probate, which can cost several hundred thousand dollars in lawyers fees, as it winds its way through courts
